Chapter 60 by Marcus Cooper
That worked out. Is there another part to Makoto's past?
He did go to summer camp once...
We open on the Naegi family driving the family car into the countryside. Mr. Naegi is driving, his wife is in the passenger seat, and Komaru is in the back, hugging a seven year old Makoto so hard his face is turning purple.
"Komaru...can't...breath..."
"I have to squeeze four weeks worth of love into this hug! Don't hassle me!"
You're probably wondering why this is the case. Well, Makoto is now old enough to qualify for the nearest summer camp, and fearing their son is growing up too sheltered with a smothering sister and few other friends, they signed him up for camp with strangers to **** him out of his comfort zone. As the car pulled up beside the gate of Camp Taiyō no Yorokobi, a tanned motherly figure met them.
"Ah, you must be the Naegis." The camp counselor knelt down to Komaru (now unattached from her brother) and addressed her directly. "And you must be little Makoto." Komaru now has a questioning look on her face.
"No, I'm Komaru. Makoto is my onii-chan!"
"Onii-chan?" The woman now matches Komaru's expression, equally confused.
"Yep, the best onii-chan!" Her confusion turned to anger before getting ahold of herself and yelling for her little helper.
"Akane!" One could see a blur speeding across the rooftops of the relatively small buildings before touching down in front of the gate. This is Akane Owari, the future Ultimate Gymnast.
"Yeah, Ma?" The girl smiled wide, happy to see new people.
"How did this happen?" She points to Makoto, not feeling the need to explain further.
"What, we got an overprotective big brother? Don't worry, I'll take care of him; I speak fluent older sibling."
"...That's not the problem, Akane..."
"Then what is?" Akane was very confused, as it sounded like her mother needed her urgently.
"The problem is Makoto's a boy!"
"Excuse me, why is that a problem?" Mrs. Naegi steps up to the camp mother. While she's the first to admit that she shelters her little boy too much, old habits die hard, and this one likely never will.
"Sorry, you probably didn't know this is a girl's only summer camp." At this revelation, Mrs. Naegi turns to her husband, him being the one responsible for finding a small, out of the way camp to build their son's confidence in a somewhat controlled environment.
"That wasn't on the website, not even in the fine print! I read everything!"
"I knew I forgot something. Why'd I have so many kids..." Mrs. Owari seems exasperated, but honestly wants to do her best. She loves working with children so much, she decided to open her camp during the summer, but having so many kids, she sometimes missed some things.
"Oh, hey, I remember you. I approved your application!" Akane smiled at the fact, eager to connect with the boy.
"That's the problem; you approved a boy's application."
"What? Makoto's a girl's name..." Makoto blushed. This wasn't the first time someone had called out his androgynous name, but it is the first time someone confused him with his sister.
"It can be both..." Mrs. Tamiko Owari sighed. She'd let Akane take over stamping 'approved' on applications for a couple of minutes while she took a much needed coffee break. Caffeine is very important when you have such a large family.
"Well, if it really can't be helped..." While regrettable, the Naegi's were not going to push the issue further when this whole thing amounted to a giant miscommunication.
"Wait..." The family stopped to hear the mother out. "...We can handle him. His applications already processed and a bunk's already assigned, plush it's not like anyone's hit puberty yet. He can stay."
"Oh, good. I was hoping Makoto would make some new friends. He's been very sheltered ever since he made his first couple of friends."
"Don't worry, ma'am, with our system, I guarantee he'll make at least three friends by the end of camp. Our camp is structured so that each cabin has two bunk beds, and while we do try to mix things up, cabin mates have the most bonding activities scheduled together out of anyone. Follow me, Makoto, I'll show you to your lodge."
Who are Makoto's cabin mates?
