Chapter 28 by unseenunheard
What's next?
From a mob to an army
"I know this woman" Trent told the two vamps still standing as he continued holding a gun to them, "and she prefers a gentleman. Not that she ever dated one." Dana, getting up from the table, gave a slight smile at the last line. The assistant and the doctor cautiously stepped back from the two humans bearing their fangs to see if he'd react. Dana got behind Trent and started buttoning up her blouse. The two inched backward until they made it to the stairs, where they then ran down the stairs and into the parking lot. With the threat out of sight, the clerk stood back up. He used one of his vampiric fingernails to dig the bullet out of his cheek. Slowly but visibly the entry wound started to heal.
Trent led Dana to his truck and they quickly scurried inside. "How," Dana began to ask not really sure which of a million questions to ask first, "Just how?" Trent hurriedly looked behind him and spun the steering wheel, not sure if any of the vamps were on their tail, responded, "I was investigating who might've wanted Shipbottom dead." His truck reversed out of the parking lot hitting another car. He then put it in drive and slammed the gas hitting the main road. He continued, "I wasn't getting anywhere, especially with so many people just missing. I stopped in the bank to talk to one of his investor buddies. He wouldn't say anything, so I slipped a hidden microcamera in his office." He took a quick glance at the pile of gear (laptop, 3 microcameras, and stadium mike) on the seat between them. "I thought I might hear a payoff or him talking about a motive. I never expected in my wildest dreams to have one teller drag a female teller in the office to have some kinda weird monster sex. I left the camera there, but it's all recorded on the laptop. I was going to make a call to the office when I saw you left a message. So I dropped everything in case they got you too." Dana blushed a little that he put aside the biggest story ever to make sure she was safe. "What now?" she asked.
An hour later it was officially dark. They were in the truck, turned off so there would be no noise. In a wooded area away from prying eyes. they sat in the truck with Trent tapping away at the laptop and Dana growing restless. She didn't say anything to her rescuer, knowing all too well his reporter mind was racing a mile a minute. He finally broke the silence, "So you remember last year when I wrote that story about how a town this size didn't need traffic cameras?" "Yeah," she laughed slightly, "You almost cost me the re-election with that one." "Well now I take that all back. I'm glad you installed them. And I'm even more glad that your tech guy in a year still hasn't changed the remote passwords on them from 'danagotbigb00bz'" "[sigh] If we get out of this and he's not some creature I'm SO firing him." "Here," Trent excitedly said, "look at this." His screen had the black and white images from the traffic cameras. "Are they -- are they marching?" Sure enough, clumps of vampires were trudging along. "Yes, but I can't figure out where they're going," he told her at a complete loss. Dana knew her town better than anyone. She talked out the problem relying on what landmarks she saw. "So that's Wilshire, heading west. The movie theater is along Cranberry. They're all heading northwest, but there's nothing there except the church." "If these things are what what you and I know they are, then the last place you'd think they'd go is there." Trent started up the truck and rapidly made a u-turn, "We're not going there? Are we?"
Dana and Trent raced to get to the church before any of the vampires. Multiple times they saw a few of the creatures mid-march, their red eyes reflecting the streetlights like a cat's. They didn't seem interested in breaking pattern to go after the truck as it whizzed past them. Finally, the two made it to the church. It stood at the top of a hill with trees scattered about. The parking lot led to the big-double doors that all the parishioners used. The mayor and the reporter ran inside, each carrying some of his gear. Once in they turned the locks on those same doors, then went to work putting anything they could find including one of the pews to barricade the doors. A voice came from the altar, "What do you think you're doing?!" It was Reverend Shaker, a slightly portly woman in her fifties who served the community honorably for the last two decades. "Reverend, you have to get out of here. I can't explain it, but there's mob on its way. You need to leave NOW!" "Mayor, this is certainly a surprise to see you here." Dana put one hand over her face to compose herself, trying to keep calm and put aside that she was trying to save the reverend's life and the reverend was more concerned about Dana's church attendance. As she implored the reverend to run for safety, Trent positioned his three remaining microcameras in the church: One at a window facing the outside, one pointed at the front doors, and one at the altar. Hearing the mob come within a few hundred feet of the church, they gave up on the reverend and made their way down to the basement.
Outside the mob consisting of most of the town stared at the wretched holy place in front of them, a few of the hungrier newborns tried to venture onto the church grounds. Once they did it was like hitting an invisible wall of pure pain, but not the kind the vamps enjoyed. They yelped in agony then fell back. From the back of the mob, one vampire made her way to the front as others instinctively let her through. It was Angelique Van Pollard, holder of the mysterious candle. The many vampires looked in awe as she gingerly pushed the candle into the barrier that kept them out and it lit upon doing so. With the lit candle in hand she turned to the mass of monsters behind her and shouted, "LET THE DESCRATION BEGIN!"
Minutes prior to this Trent and Dana settled themselves in the church basement. Trent placed his laptop on the ping-pong table and with a few taps removed the traffic cameras from his screen and then saw his own cameras. Meanwhile, Dana locked the door from the basement to the main church, then she took the food for that night's bible study over to the ping pong table where the two would be sitting. Trent's appetite hadn't wavered as he watched the mob not be able to walk onto the church grounds. Two doughnuts in he thought they might be safe, but then he spit out his coffee when the one vamp with the candle seemed to threaten that safety.
The mob encircled the church as close as they could get. Without any further prompting they began. Some were happily masturbating in the direction of the church. Others gathered in groups of two to ten fucking in a sea of pale flesh. The more violent use their fangs and claws to tear into each other, basking in the pain as their flesh healed as quickly as it was rended. With each bit of debauchery, of abject sacrilege, the flame in the candle grew. It was far greater in size than the candle itself. The beasts circled about to partake of the festivities with as many people as they could. One minute Professor JJ pleasured herself to orgasm, then three male vamps came by and she happily served them all at once. Becky ran into her father, Pete. They kissed each other deeply, followed by him clamping down on her vampire neck with his fangs and she laughed how wonderful it all was.
The reverend did not know what to make of all this. She was frozen in place hoping that no one could see her through the windows. In the basement, Trent and Dana could not make sense of what was happening yet dared not turn away. It was hours later when the carnality surrounding them bit-by-bit stopped. Angelique Van Pollard, who had stood nearly motionless holding the candle as the chaos ensued again moved the candle into the area of the church grounds. This time the barrier become visible for the slightest fraction of a second and dissipated in almost a phosphorescent flash.
What happens inside the church?
