Brucey could really sing! He had a guitar called Lucy in the backseat.
“Yeah runnin' down a dream
That never would come to me
Workin' on a mystery, goin' wherever it leads
Runnin' down a dream…” he sang Tom Petty.
Clemens sang too. Smiley. Squeaky. Squawky. Out of tune. But Brucey didn’t discourage her. Soon they were singing at the top of their lungs.
He drove fast too. But not in the sorta way that made you scared, but in the way made you feel safe.
“She's a good girl, loves her mama,” he sang.
“I’m a good girl, oh no mama,” she sang.
“Loves Jesus and America, too,” he smiled.
“Blah Blah Jesus, America yeah,” she sang.
“She’s a good girl, crazy ‘bout Elvis..”
“Yeah yeah Elvis!”
“Loves horses and her boyfriend, too..”
“Horses and no boyfriends!”
They sang all the way.
“I’m free! Free Fallin!” Together.
Them and dusty road. Tom Petty too.
