Chapter 3 by Zebra Zebra

Are you Male or Female?

Female

Alex sat sipping her drink slowly, the slender red headed human had been left stranded at the Altair cluster space station. After the star liner she had been working on was impounded by the authorities, so she had been sitting around with little to do. She had filed a looking for work circular with the station master, but so far no one needed a new crew member. And so her days were just packed, first she got up and left her room first thing in the morning. Checked with the station master to see if anyone was looking to hire her, then she walked around the station watching for anyone she knew. And then the rest of her day was sitting around nursing a drink, and looking for a bit of fun in the bar. She had thought about gambling, but couldn't really afford to toss her credits away.

And so she was taking a long sip, when a tall ferocious Klingon came stomping into the bar. The bulky armor clad warrior paused just by the bar, beady dark eyes scanning the room slowly. Before they settled on the lone human sitting at her corner table, Alex watched in surprise as the Klingon strolled up to her table. "You are a engineer?" The Klingon's voice had a deep throaty quality, that was exotic sounding there was also a slight slurred.

"Ammm sure." Alex grunted, unsure where this was going as she watched the other drop into the chair. "Alex Murphy..." The human offered holding her hand out, the ugly Klingon just looked at that pale for a moment. "What can I do for you?" Alex asked tucking her hand away, after a slight embarrassing pause.

"Uthux Ovirr... Captain of the good ship Not'qa." The ugly Klingon introduced himself, simply starring at Alex with those cruel dark eyes. "I am told that you are looking to sign on with a new ship." Alex nodded her head slowly, the human was honestly unsure about crewing on ship of the cruel looking race. But at least it would be better than just sitting around the bar, soaking up cheap drinks and being bored out of her mind. The Captain seemed to respect the human's silence, and so pushed on with what he was saying. "We were attacked by petaQ pirates, as we past between the Beltran nebula and the Asteroid fields around the Tolulin gas giants. Our engineer died heroically when one of the plasma conducts ruptured, we managed to stabilize our engines."

"What kind of ship are you flyin'?" Alex asked as the Klingon grunted at him, like the human has just ask him if his mother was easy.

"Baka Re G-3 freighter... she's a older model. However it is a well built and well defended craft, and has been retrofitted with the latest upgrades in weapons, shields, and warp engines."

"And yet... you still had a plasma conduct rupture in a fight... Sounds like you have retrofitted a more powerful main power plant, but didn't upgrade all your subsystems like plasma conducts." Alex watched the Captain wince slightly, and knew that she had hit the nail on the head. Of course he wasn't completely displeased with the humans comment, it showed that this pale alien really did know her stuff.

"Yes... There are only so many credits... out former engineer was in to process of installing them one at a time when we got attacked."

"So how many are left to replace?" Alex asked rubbing her chin thoughtfully, as the Klingon looked at her silently for a moment.

"Seven more... we have four new conducts ready to be installed, if you come on you could get them in while we are here. However we will need to complete a few runs to have the credits to afford to do the rest. I hope you will not be too much of a bIHnuch to signing on, I would not willingly travel without an engineer." Alex nodded her head slowly as she listened, it was both a challenging and dangerous job.

"Show me to your ship... I will get working on it right away. If you'll send someone to my quarters to pick up my things. I'll get the work done first... we can resister my employment status with the station master before we ship out." Alex explained watching the Klingon's eyes widen in amazement, it was a very trusting way of doing things and it surprised him enormously.

"So be it..."
