Explaining luck

In the morning, you make a trip around town, checking in on people. The battle felt like a bit of an afterthought, with what happened afterwards, but for most of the people in town it is of course still fresh. You and Ferra offer comfort where you can, though thankfully most of the wounded were handled by magical healers. The death toll, too, was less than it could have been, thanks in part to Niran badly underestimating you.

Next, you meet up with Victor, Amara, Ben and Bella. After explaining what happened, and what you need to do, Ben is the first to respond. By laughing.

“You really are your father’s son. To hear him tell it, he stumbled into his position the same way you are.”

You chuckle. “That’s what dad told me as well. He also said that my mom and aunts kept him from doing anything too dumb. Hopefully I get similar help.”

Ferra cocks her head. “We try. You do have astounding luck, however. I would rather that you didn’t lean on it so heavily.”

Victor nods. “I agree. You have a habit of living on the edge. You’re not invincible. And now, you’re planning on grabbing some armor that’s cursed to turn people into bloodthirsty maniacs?”

Amara shakes her head. “Not cursed. Possessed. I am familiar with the armor. I aided in hiding it. The being trapped within will attempt to ensnare your mind, though I don’t believe she does so willingly. It’s simply in her nature.”

You nod. “I agree. I had a run in with the armor during my trials. Samus says we need her power.”

Victor sighs. “Just because you know what it does doesn’t mean you can resist it!”

You think for a moment. “What I’m going to tell you is a secret, and cannot leave this room. I have a power that I keep hidden, and for good reason. If our enemies knew about it, it would be useless.”

They all look at you, clearly intrigued. Even Ferra seems surprised. Victor nods. “We can keep a secret. Go on.”

You smile. “My secret is that magic can’t harm me. And if someone tries, it will appear to be an accident that saves me.”

Ferra shakes her head. “But you were captured by magic.”

You nod. “I can be affected, yes. But I can’t be actively hurt. And other than being separated, nothing harmful came from my capture. In fact, that’s how I met Sarah, so it ended up being beneficial!”

Bella shakes her head. “But that was purely coincidence…oh. Oh!”

You shrug. “It’s hard to say how much of that I caused. But I’ve seen the effects many times. And I’m willing to take the chance that it will protect me here.”

Amara nods. “I hope you’re right. If you’re wrong, and she’s able to influence your thoughts, it could be catastrophic.”

Victor sighs. “We’re not going to be able to convince you not to do this, are we.”

You shake your head. “If this can destroy the corruption, it could change everything. If we can cure the leaders of the order, it could end all of this.”

Bella smiles. “Probably not, but it would definitely tip the balance of power. The nobles will still be a problem.”

Victor shrugs. “One problem at a time, right? How long will you be gone?”

Amara answers for you. “The tomb isn’t far. Less than a day’s journey.”

You nod. “Nadia says we should be back in a few days. I highly doubt that there will be another attack in that time.”

Ben sighs. “You’re right, but we will be careful regardless. They know we’re here now. And we don’t have any surprises left for them.”

You smile. “That’s what they think. I’ll be back soon, and we can start working on turning this around.”

Victor nods, and stands up, shaking your hand. “Good luck. We’ll clean things up here.”

You chuckle. “I appreciate it.”

With that, you head out, making your way back towards your cabin.
