What's next?
Enjoy the party.
Mia glanced toward the kitchen.
“Want to grab another drink?”
“Sure.”
We made our way through the crowd, talking as we went. She grabbed a drink for herself, and I got another for me.
When we walked back into the main room, the music had picked up. People were packed around the makeshift dance floor.
Mia looked at me.
“You dance?”
I laughed.
“Not particularly.”
“Neither do I.”
She set her drink down on a nearby table.
“Then we’re both qualified.”
I laughed again.
“Fair enough.”
She held out her hand.
I hesitated for half a second before taking it.
We moved toward the crowd and started dancing.
At first, it felt a little awkward. I wasn’t used to being at parties like this, much less dancing with someone I’d met less than an hour ago.
But Mia made it easy.
We laughed when I nearly stepped on her foot, and after a few minutes I stopped thinking about whether I looked stupid.
I just enjoyed myself.
The music was loud, the room was crowded, and the whole night felt completely different from my usual routine.
For a while, I forgot about classes.
Forgot about the dorm.
Even forgot to check my phone.
I was just there, dancing with Mia and letting myself experience something I’d spent most of college avoiding.
Then, somewhere in the back of my mind, the thought of Sarah surfaced again.
I pushed it aside and kept dancing.
It was only a party.
At least, that’s what I told myself.
