Duh

Will woke up feeling refreshed. In fact he felt better than he had in a long time. Normally he spent very little effort getting ready in the morning, with very little motivation to do anything. Today was different.

He jumped out of bed, had a shower, got dressed and made a delicious omelette all before 7am. He shot Sally a quick text letting her know she could come over whenever she wanted and sat down to watch tv.

After just a few minutes though he felt bored. The old Will had spent far too much time sedentary. He was young again, he shouldn't waste his time on television.

Turning off the tv he picked up a book. A novel he had bought years ago but never found the energy to actually read. Before long he was so engrossed he lost all track of time.

So of course he could be forgiven for what came next. There was a knock at the door which shook him out of his book. He just assumed it must be Sally and got up to answer it.

"Hi Sal...oh." He opened it to reveal, not Sally, but his neighbor Marv.

Marv looked at him confused, "Huh? Who are you? Where's Will?"

Will tried to think fast, not his strong suit, "Uh he's away. I'm his... son." Son? Why'd he say that. Now he'd get even more questions.

"Huh, I didn't know he had a son." Marv said suspiciously.

"Neither did he. My mother only recently told me about him. They were never together... anyway how can I help you?" Will decided the less details he invented, the better.

Marv shrugged, "Well I suppose you look quite a bit like him, don't you. Well I just came by to say goodbye. I don't suppose he'll be back soon?"

Will shook his head, "No. When are you leaving?" Will remembered now, Marv had told him his kids wanted to move him out of here. Not safe on his own they said. They wanted to move him to an old age home, but he'd resisted. Looks like the kids finally won.

"Today. In a few hours. Well, tell him goodbye for me will ya? Oh and here," Marv passed him a bag, "They don't want me to take my booze, and my kids never appreciated a good Scotch. Don't you go drinking it, it's for your father, understand?"

Will nodded, "Of course. I'll make sure he gets it."

Marv nodded, but made no move to leave. Finally he shook his head, "Never get old kid. It sucks. What do you do, huh? For work?"

Will wasn't sure what to say. He didn't want to tell him he was unemployed, that would upset Marv he knew. He also didn't want to invent a job he knew nothing about. Oh, he had an idea, "Actually I'm retired. Won the lottery. I've just been having fun while I try to figure out my next steps."

Marv looked amazed, "Wow. Good for you. Ya, good for you. Don't waste it all now. Make sure you have enough when your old like me. But don't save it either, enjoy it. Enjoy being young while you can," Geez, did Marv always talk this much, Will wondered? "Anyway I should let you go," Finally, Marc started to turn away, "You know...I've known your father for a number of years. He's a good guy...but he seems like he's lost hope. He's alive, but he's not really living. I have a lot of regrets at my age, but it's not too late for him. Maybe now that you're here...maybe you can help. Get him out into the world again, a participant, not just an observer. And don't make the same mistakes he did, don't spend your life alone. Find a women, heck, find a dozen. A young rich man like you? You'll have no problem there right. Heck, I wish you would." Marv waved bye and left.

Oh no...oh no. This was bad. Was that a wish? Or not? Does Will have to...what? Find a woman? A dozen? What does that even mean? Does the wish follow his literal words...or his intentions? Will slowly closed the door and slumped down on the floor.
