Chapter 4 by Phyte Phyte

What do you test first?

Does this ability only work on objects?

I walked to my room and began to brainstorm, I had one data point so it was time to test what did and didn't work. Mom didn't make any mention of the return of her water bottle so maybe there was a mnemonic effect there, though I'd have to see how much she remembered. So many questions to be answered: was the sharpie the key, was it me, was only my mom effected, and/or what did I have to write for it work? Most importantly did it just effect objects? I could still do a lot with that but...

To begin with I left my room and quietly entered the master bedroom, I looked around before finding my mother's silver laptop on her nightstand. I wrote my name on the back of it. From there I found a pencil and entered my mom's office before writing my name on the front page of one of her booklets, worse case scenario I play it off as a joke.

I walk back into the living room holding the two items and let her see them, my mom gasps in shock as she see them and for a moment I am worried she has been pranking me the whole time, "Oh honey I am so sorry I didn't realize that those were yours I've been using them so thoughtlessly." She takes on a conflicted expression and asks me a question, "Honey, is it possible for me to borrow the laptop from you, even just for a little while? I've got a lot of work related files in there and..."

She trails off slightly and I answer before she can continue, "You can use it whenever I am not and if you need it for whatever reason just ask and I'll probably say yes. Same with the booklet." Sarah offers me a glowing smile and stands to give me a hug and then gives me a kiss on the cheek. I excuse myself and leave her to her book once more, I quickly put her, sorry my, laptop back where it was.

'It isn't just the sharpie, erasing it makes the effect go away. This is a bit risky but I could test her memory by removing my name from the booklet before her eyes to see if she notices the discrepancy. Better to find out this way I guess.' With my plan in mind I walk up to Sarah again and erase my name from the page in clear view of her. She looks puzzled for a moment before asking me a question.

"Why are you holding my notebook honey?"

I slightly panic as I try to think of an excuse, "Ah, I uh, thought you might want it to keep track of what chapter you leave off of in case your phone glitches so it doesn't track properly, you know how tech can be, it chooses the weirdest things to forget." She smiles and takes the booklet from me. I internally consider what just happened, 'Alright see didn't remember that it was mine, so there is memory fuckery going on, confirmed. Got it, I guess the next question is can I write something other than my name, does it work by me just writing on something?' I walk to the kitchen and grab the grocery list, I take note of something we could buy that isn't already on it and write that down on the paper.

"Hey mom," I walk back, disturbing once more, not that she seems to mind and show her the list she gives it a look but doesn't make any comment like she has. "I was thinking of going to the store tomorrow to pick up groceries, this is up to date right?" She nods and I leave her be again. 'Okay so it has to be my name or something like that. I guess the question becomes does it work on partial things, can I set rules by writing them instead of just saying them when a person sees it, and...does it work on people?'

This was far riskier but I decided to expand beyond just my name so I grabbed a cookbook, I find a page with one of my mother's favorite cakes and write: "Theodore's Page" at the top. Worse comes to worse I'll quickly write my name on the book to make sure she doesn't cuss me out, if she doesn't recall me once owning it I doubt she'd care once she sees its mine.

I walked over to her under the pretense of talking about tomorrow's diner. As it turns out, claiming a part of something did work, I gave her permission to use that page as if it was her own and not to worry. She didn't even bat an eye when I wrote on another page beyond commenting that she didn't know that was also mine, it was a song and dance at this point. When she left the living room and went to the washroom I quickly tested if I could make rules and claim something broader than the immediate object. I wrote on her door:

"Theodore's Room, Rules:

  1. Sarah is allowed to enter and use this room however she pleases provided it violates no other rules
  2. No one will think any of these rules are odd and will not speak of them without showing them to another person
  3. No one can erase these rules or Theodore's name and everyone will ensure they do not accidentally do so
  4. As this room's owner Theodore is allowed to enter at any time but Sarah may request privacy which he can give or deny at his leisure."

If this only worked on my mother I would be floored but it would still be workable, I'd just have to ensure no one came over and saw my name and these rules everywhere. Now was the moment of truth, would this work or not. It was a calculated risk, perhaps I was rushing despite my intent but I felt this would work or be easy to recover from.

When Sarah exited the bathroom she looked at her door for a moment before her shoulders relaxed and she entered her room, well, if she didn't scream about the weirdness or come asking to enter then it must have all worked. I could claim things a bit more broadly than just the immediate object, I can set rules by writing and not just orally speaking, so all forms of verbal communication.

But I was finally confident enough to try something new, writing on my mother...Sarah. I shiver of desire rather through me at the thought of what that could mean if it worked. And if it didn't work I'd just be cutesy about it and tell her she is the best mother in the world and I wanted her to remember me when she looked at my name and let her write her name on me too.

Moment of Truth.

How do you approach your mother?
