Do they have a solution?

Ross and Erica sat across from Andrew and Madison at a nearby diner. It was a local favorite for late-night study sessions, but right now it was deserted save for them. Andrew picked nervously at his french fries and Ross sipped a mug of coffee; Erica ate a small salad without much enthusiasm and Madison was sipping a vanilla malt.

"So they're coming to inspect her next week," Ross said. "Can't you just put her old script back in her?"

"That wouldn't work," Madison explained. "She'll remember everything you've done and without the modified script, she'll immediately turn you both in."

"I thought you could only remember stuff from the same script," Ross objected. The professor filled him in on golem memory and he sighed.

"Great, so you'll be able to remember all of this because you're the same person with only a few tweaks." Andrew sipped his coffee. "Could we try to make another copy? One that's almost exactly the same but with a hidden command to, I don't know, forget the events of this week?"

"That would be very risky," the professor told him. "These are golem technicians. They're trained to look for anything suspicious and a week of missing memory would be very suspicious."

Even now Ross couldn't stop leering at her impressive cleavage. Madison slapped his arm playfully. "Ross! Are you ogling Erica right in front of me?"

He started to protest but she laughed. "Dude, I'm just busting your balls. Neither of us are real, stare away." She turned to Erica. "Is Andrew this neurotic?"

"No, he has a totally different set of issues," the professor said with a laugh. "But back to the problem at hand. On Wednesday night, the tech will show up and unbind my script. He's going to pore over it for evidence of tampering, and if he finds any this whole thing blows up. How do we make sure he sees my original script without programming me to turn you in?"

They sat in sullen silence for a moment, then Madison spoke.

"Is it the same tech every time?"

"Not usually," Erica replied. "The company has thousands of them. They service dozens of us every week. This is very routine, so they probably send a rookie. Why?"

"Just thinking," Madison said. "Have you been resculpted at all since you were created?"

Erica shook her head. "No, but the head of the department has the authority to have me resculpted at will."

"Resculpting is the process of physically changing a golem," Madison explained. "I've been resculpted a few times to give the appearance of aging. I can't be seventeen forever! But my point is, the tech won't have any idea what you look like."

Erica nodded thoughtfully. "So we just need a golem that could stand in for me. One that's never had my script, so it wouldn't have any memories."

"But what about your classes and stuff?" Ross asked. "Some other person can't just walk in and pretend to be you."

"Oh, the technician only comes at night. They make up a story to get all of the students to stay away from the building and he comes in and inspects me and Professor Mehdi. When he's done, he pops the script back in and I go back to waiting for work hours to start."

"There's a flaw in our plan," Andrew pointed out. "Where are we gonna get a fresh golem that can stand in for Erica?"

Madison let out an exasperated sigh. "Come on, dude. Obviously it's me."
