Dipping Her Toes
After she'd recovered from giving birth to Samson, Elizabeth decided to have a pamper day. She got dressed up and made up, going down to the salon. She entered, getting a mani and pedi. And then she saw Julia enter, followed by Allie.
"Hey ladies," Elizabeth said, a bit hesitantly.
"Hey Elizabeth," Julia said. They'd been best of friends once, but after she'd divorced Douglas and married Moses, that was a bit frayed.
"Elizabeth," Allie said. "I've heard you had your mixed baby. I bet it knocked $50,000 off the value of my home." She sniffed haughtily. Bitch, Elizabeth thought. But she swallowed the bile.
"Moses isn't that bad," she said. "He's the former mayor for God's sake. And a little diversity in the neighborhood never hurt anyone. But I'm still the same woman that you hung out with you all the time, Julia, and the same woman you tolerated for purposes of raising money for the PTA, Allie."
That chastened the women a bit. They talked about kids and their activities and neighborhood gossip for a bit. Elizabeth liked Julia, and it felt good to be close with her again, but this was done for Moses. At the end, they agreed to get wine and go to the hair salon the following week.
