Dinner plans

The next few days had been spent with tests after tests, mostly to cover up the fact that the doctors were giving the two of you time to adjust to your new bodies and realities, partly to you now being a teenage girl and your mom now transitioning to becoming a 43 year-old man. It was something that was a bit strange for you two, to be honest, namely because while you still carried a bit of your normal, old-body habits along with you into your current bodies, there was still some residual carry-over from your host bodies. It sounded strange to put it in such scientific terms, "host body" was an odd way to say your body...but it sounded better than calling it a "donor" body, which you supposed was right.

One thing you brought up to your dad as the two of you sat down in his room for dinner the last night of the hospital stay, you had managed to walk in there just as he was getting out of the bathroom, was the oddity at how quickly you adapted to being Kayleigh. "After all, we weren't all that close...I mean, except for the random calls and run-ins at Grandma's, didn't know her that well..."

Your dad, it was easier to think and refer to mom as Dad and as a man with masculine pronouns now, agreed. "Yeah, I didn't like Gregory that much, either. I think if he hadn't married June, your dad's sister, we wouldn't have been even close enough to say two words to each other. Don't get me wrong, he was nice enough but it was just too jarring, y'know?"

The two of you paused for a moment when he looked down at his hand and noticed the lack of a ring and discoloration from the wedding band. "I suppose that's also a relief, then, that June died a few years back. Can't imagine what she'd be like now, hearing about his ****." June and he had been really close so it would not be too far a stretch to say his sister would be difficult to handle at the moment. "Gods, it's weird, isn't it?"

You nodded, pausing to adjust your hair for a moment and then sighed. "We'll have to deal with this. I mean, where do they even live? I thought they were in High-brook?" It was a town a few miles down the road from the city where you had lived with your family.

Gregory shook his head. "I thought that too but looking at his driver's license, it says Crane River, that's a good 5-6 hours away from here." Your dad sighed again as he leaned back and tilted his head to the side. "I'd say that we have maybe a 6-8 hour drive back?"

You looked outside the window for a few moments before you turned and looked at him. "I want to keep doing this, dad...I feel like us talking, just the two of us, it's a way to keep me from losing grips on my sanity."

He smiled and nodded. "I know what you mean. I may be your dad now...but in here," he pointed to his head, "it's still going to be me, always."
