Day 5: Captain Elizabeth

It has been nearly 16 hours since the initial outbreak. As captain of the Athena and having ordered the ship to be locked down and the rapid spread of the infection throughout the Athena, I could only assume they got to Vanessa and had her stop the lockdown. That being said I was able to use the local manual bulkhead controls to lock down the area around the bridge leaving myself and 49 others trapped at the front of the ship with no way to escape. With Laura likely infected too she would doubtlessly find away to breach the bulkhead within the day or tomorrow. Having to fight and possibly kill your own crew certainly isn’t something anyone would desire.

When the outbreak started a young Lieutenant Aiko entered the bridge wearing only a bra and some panties. I ordered the usage the closing of the local bulkheads with the manual controls which sealed this end of the ship from the infected. But from what I could figure sealed the fates of whatever remaining crew wasn’t infected on the other side of the bulkhead. After that I shut down the ships internal communications network to try and prevent the infected from hacking into our communicators among other systems. Just out of extra precaution I shot the security camera in the bridge to prevent the infected from spying on us.

Unfortunately, all of this happened while I was off duty and was still in my casual clothes as I was casually checking on things at the bridge. With my uniform was still in the locker room beyond the bulkhead separating us from the infected. I was stuck in a pair of shorts and a white tank top.

I ended up bunking with my XO, Commander Meera Dlamini since her room was unfortunately sealed on the other side. Opening the door to my room I was greeted by her standing at the door.

“Oh! Good morning captain!” Meera greeted me.

“Good morning Meera.” I greeted her back. “Something happening?”

“Yes Ma’am, I came to get you.” Meera confirmed.

“It appears the infected have started to try and cut their way through the bulkhead.” Meera began to explain. “From our heat censors we believe they broke into some of the engineering and construction equipment in the cargo hold and are using the equipment there to cut their way through.”

“How long do you estimate it will take for them to get through?” I watched as I could see part of the meter thick bulkhead door begin to glow slightly red and yellow.

“From what we figure it’ll take them about a day or possibly two to get through the bulkhead.” She informed me.

“Thanks for letting me know.” I thanked her and then turned to the rest of the crew present. “Ladies I want you to continue to set up barricades. If they get through you will be our first and last line of defense.”

“Yes ma’am!” They replied.

“Were you able to get us a run down on supplies like I asked for?” I turned back to Meera.

“Yes ma’am I was able to get everything down on paper for you.” Meera said handing me a clipboard she had sitting down on a metal box next to her waiting for me. “I had just finished when our Security detail noticed what was happening. We have just enough food and water to last us a week potentially.”

“Excellent. Thank you Meera.” I said looking over the supplies.

Meera was right, from the list of supplies, we had about a week’s worth of supplies and would hopefully last us long enough to escape after we came out of warp. If we could possibly hold off the infected we could potentially get a message out if not escape from the ship itself.

I continued on and decided to head to the storage room that contained much of the supplies we had discussed and currently housed many of the crew who had ended up on this side of the bulkhead. Opening the door nearly two dozen of my crew were sitting around or sleeping. A few of them were talking quietly. There was a one girl in the back who was crying while talking to herself. She had suffered a mental breakdown when the infection began.

My crew was not ready for such a crisis. And to be fair to them neither was I. I could never have imagined an infection such as this could have broken out among our crew, turning our crew against each other and leaving us trapped on our own ship. I wanted to learn more about what we were up against and headed for the brig.

Opening the door to the brig I stepped inside to see the security guard on duty was the young Petty Officer Michelle Ortiz who looked extremely uncomfortable sitting at a small table in front of the prison cell. Michelle immediately stood up and saluted me for which I returned her salute. Michelle was a petite young woman, with long black hair and a slender frame. She had joined the Athena’s crew when she turned 19 and was the youngest member of the crew.

“Captain I’ll be leaving then.” Michelle said before giving me a salute which I returned before she stepped out of the brig.

“What was it you wanted to show me?!” Michelle asked confused.
