DARK AND LIGHT - AKI POV
"Boss," Azzle's voice slices through the haze of slumber, gently rousing Aki from his dreams. "The dynamic duo has arrived."
Aki's eyes flutter open, greeted by the sight of Yumi and Landale making their approach. Weariness graces their smiles, while Yumi's tousled blonde hair and slightly disheveled attire hint at the trials they've faced.
"Good morning, Aki!" Yumi's warm smile radiates as she greets him. Behind her, Azzle watches with a mix of fear and curiosity, subtly positioning himself behind a tree.
Aki acknowledges their presence with a nod, gesturing toward the mouthwatering scent of roasted rabbits sizzling over the crackling fire.
"Come and eat," Aki's tone is inviting and hospitable. His gaze sweeps over the surroundings, revealing the emerging dawn. Sunlight filters through the dense foliage of the forest, accompanied by the harmonious melodies of birdsong welcoming the new day.
"That smells divine," Landale declares theatrically, his nose twitching as he sniffs the air. With casual grace, he tosses his satchel onto a nearby tree before settling down by the flickering campfire. "I am starving!"
Yet, Yumi's attention is not solely fixated on the food. She approaches Aki, her concern etched into her features as she crouches beside him. "How are your ribs faring?" Her voice is a gentle murmur.
"Better now that you are here," Aki's eyes hold a glint of sincerity. With determined effort, he manages to sit upright, the strain evident on his countenance. An appreciative smile graces his lips as he gazes at Yumi. "Let's eat."
Yumi nods, placing her satchel and shield beside Aki before selecting a pair of succulent roasted rabbits. Her intent is clear – to ensure Aki savors the meal.
Emerging from the shadows, Azzle tentatively joins the group, his gaze nervously flitting toward Yumi. "Um, boss?" he interjects tentatively.
Realization dawns on Aki, a smile breaking across his face. "I forgot to mention, Yumi, Azzle is now an official member of our team."
Balancing two skewered rabbit portions, Yumi shifts her attention to Azzle with a quirked eyebrow. "Is that so?" Her curiosity is piqued, and Azzle's toothy grin, tinged with apprehension, carries a certain charm. After a brief pause, Yumi returns the smile. "Welcome aboard."
If Landale registers the omission from Aki's introduction, he doesn't show it. Already engrossed in his meal, he pays little attention to Azzle. Munching away, he greets Azzle through a mouthful of food, "Greetings, goblin! You're one of us now!" Specks of food escape onto the ground and in the last roasted rabbit on the campfire, he wields the remaining rabbit skewer playfully.
"Ugh!" Azzle groans in disgust, edging towards the last roasted rabbit, almost bumping Landale aside. He snatches the final piece, scrutinizing it before casting an accusing glare at Landale. "Gluttonous grubber!
"An eloquent choice of words, goblin," Landale retorts, still chewing and giving Azzle an unimpressed look. "Though a bit redundant, I must say."
"What?" Azzle shoots back indignantly, meticulously inspecting his food and removing traces of Landale's pilfering. "We already have a wily wizard! Which means you're the redundant retar-"
Amused, Yumi watches the banter unfold. Turning to tend to Aki, she notices the strain in his breathing, his ribs causing him obvious discomfort. Concern clouds her eyes. "We should rest today," she whispers softly, a hint of urgency in her voice. "So I can help heal your ribs enough for the rest of our journey."
Aki's response is resolute, almost stubborn. "No," he asserts firmly. "I can press on." Realizing his tone may have sounded too stern, he softens his expression and adds with a gentle smile, "And besides... the capital will evaluate our progress based on our speed through this path."
In truth, Aki's concern isn't so much about the evaluation; he's confident they'll progress through the ranks quickly enough. The underlying motive is simpler: "The sooner we're away from Landale, the better," he muses inwardly.
Frowning slightly, Yumi acquiesces with a nod before turning her attention to Azzle. "Azzle, is there anything nearby that might aid Aki's ribs?"
Azzle ponders for a moment before responding. "There's a human bandit camp to the north. They might have some clerics."
Yumi shakes her head firmly. "Too risky," she asserts. "Are there any other potential solutions?"
Azzle's lips curl into a wry smile. "Honestly, that's probably the least perilous option," he remarks. "The next nearest possibility is a temple where the Cult of the Withered Tree gathers. I don't know much about it. We goblins steer clear of it, and occasionally the formidable humans from your village launch attacks against it."
"Oh," Aki says, quickly comprehending.
Yumi gazes at Aki curiously.
Aki ponders for a moment, then speaks, "The Cult of the Withered Tree worships a corrupted nature deity. The temple likely harbors twisted, malevolent spirits along with other blighted creatures."
Aki continues, "We can't venture there. It's far too perilous. I suspect that temple is why this route is less favored. Oh, and those 'strong ones' from our village that Azzle mentioned are our Academy Professors."
The trio gazes at Aki in awe, silently questioning how he possesses such knowledge. Aki explains matter-of-factly, "Our Academy is nearby in this forest. The capital wouldn't allow significant threats in proximity to their vital military training ground, so our instructors periodically cleanse the forests of potential dangers."
Yumi raises an eyebrow. "If it's so dangerous, why not obliterate it?"
Aki's shoulders rise and fall in a resigned shrug. "Perhaps the corruption has spread too far. The only option now is containment, which is why the instructors continuously **** the temple."
Landale's face lights up as an idea strikes him. "Hold on! Goblin, when was their last attack?"
Azzle feigns annoyance, rolling his eyes. "How should I know? Maybe about two weeks ago?"
"Perfect," Landale declares with a triumphant grin. He turns to Aki, his eyes gleaming with determination. "The temple might still be weakened from the last ****. If I go, what exactly do we need from there?"
"A healing spirit," Aki answers succinctly.
Landale raises an eyebrow, skepticism creeping into his expression. "Why would a healing spirit be there?"
Aki clarifies, his tone carrying a touch of impatience, "To corrupt the spirits, they must first be captured and tainted." His expression darkens further, irritation simmering beneath the surface. "But let's not dwell on that. It's a feasible idea, Landale. We might not have to delve too deeply into the temple - the spirits could be confined elsewhere."
"Then it's decided!" Landale announces theatrically, discarding the skewer and rising to his feet. He turns to Azzle with an air of determination. "Goblin, show me the way to that cursed temple!"
With an air of nonchalance, Azzle raises his hand and gestures to the east.
Landale's resolve shines brightly. "Yumi, you're coming with me. We'll be back with a healing spirit within hours! And I'll introduce you to The New Mighty-"
Azzle interjects with a dry cough. "It's a two-day journey."
Landale's excitement deflates, replaced by a subtle undercurrent of annoyance. Aki catches a fleeting glint of resentment and hostility in Landale's eyes as they briefly flick toward Azzle. In that moment, a concealed wellspring of darker emotions is briefly exposed. However, Landale quickly shifts his expression, adopting a child-like pout and shoving his hands into his pockets with feigned nonchalance.
As the sun ascends to its zenith, casting a radiant glow upon the world, the adventuring party embarks on their journey. The sky transforms into a vibrant canvas of hues, infusing the group with an unmistakable surge of confidence. For the first time, a serene tranquility envelops each step they take, momentarily quelling the looming threat that hangs over them. Azzle discloses that the current stretch of the path offers a haven of sorts; the forest's inhabitants shun the tainted expanse, and malevolent spirits remain imprisoned within the confines of corruption.
"Yet, the Goblin Boss paid no heed," Azzle remarks, his voice tinged with a resigned tone. "Fear had long abandoned him, replaced by an insatiable thirst for greater power."
Yumi has dedicated the past hours to channeling the Lay on Hands spell onto Aki, alleviating some of the discomfort from his broken ribs. It has been over a day since her last rest, and Aki detects the fatigue she endeavors to conceal. Together, they stride forward, resolute and united, shouldering their burdens as they press onward.
Leading the way, Landale walks with an air of carefree nonchalance, a cheerful melody escaping his lips, seemingly unaffected by the impending perils that lie ahead.
"Hey, goblin," Landale interrupts suddenly. "How will we recognize our proximity to this corruption?"
"The scent will assail you first," Azzle responds, a shiver running through him as he recalls the sensation. "The miasma, the putrefaction, the stench of ****. Then you'll see... then you'll know."
"Hmm," Landale replies, his expression unfazed by Azzle's description. In fact, a spark of anticipation ignites in his eyes, an eagerness for the impending trial.
While observing Landale, a pressing question takes root in Aki's mind, compelling him to voice his concerns.
"Landale," Aki begins, preparing to articulate his thoughts. Yet, a shift in the atmosphere seizes his attention, causing him to halt abruptly. In mere moments, his companions follow suit, their movements suspended in unison. The quartet stands frozen, united by an unsettling premonition that settles over them.
His companions remain still, all equally aware that any further movement could prove fatal. Only Aki acts swiftly, pivoting towards the source of their unease, locking his gaze onto an enigmatic figure. It stands startlingly close, only a few short paces away.
"Was it here all along, or has it recently manifested?" Aki ponders in silence.
Radiant energy envelops the figure, its warmth pulsating in palpable waves. Aki contemplates stepping forward to shield Yumi from this influx, but he comprehends in an instant that they are entwined in a battle they cannot hope to conquer. This realization echoes within their very souls, a chilling certainty that permeates the very air they breathe.
Their only recourse is stillness, a collective pause as they await the intentions of this enigmatic being.
The intensity of the unknown entity's radiance increases, its heat becoming nearly unbearable. Aki feels sweat forming on his skin, but the scorching heat swiftly evaporates the moisture.
Abruptly, Aki's unease gives way to an inexplicable calmness. A faint memory from his childhood resurfaces, elusive yet familiar. The recollection remains hazy, slipping further from his grasp with every attempt to hold onto it. Among the fragments, he retains only the whispered phrase, "One way or... another..."
As fear recedes, a profound serenity envelops Aki's being. He closes his eyes, surrendering to the crescendo of brilliance emanating from the entity. The air he inhales turns searing, each breath a challenge. Amidst his struggle, Aki senses his companions awaiting orders, their anticipation palpable. He hopes they understand the gravity of the moment and refrain from any sudden movements.
Gradually, the searing heat subsides, and Aki cautiously opens his eyes. Before him stands a radiant figure, distinctly human in form, and unmistakably feminine. While the aura of light continues to enshroud her, it has dimmed sufficiently to allow Aki to scrutinize her features.
Her hair, a cascade of white, is cropped short in a stylish yet practical manner. Ethereal white eyes emanate an otherworldly glow, while her delicately sculpted features—a button-like nose and alluring lips—render her captivating. Aki is entranced by her beauty, yet upon closer examination, her pointed ears evoke the elegance of elves, and what he initially misconceived as an ornate headpiece reveals itself to be gracefully curving horns. Behind her, a forked tail serves as a testament to her extraordinary nature.
"A tiefling..." Aki's mind races to categorize her, realizing she defies conventional expectations.
"Look at me," the being's voice resonates, devoid of compulsion.
Landale promptly turns his gaze to her, while Azzle and Yumi maintain their steadfast stance, awaiting Aki's guidance. In a soft murmur, he conveys, "Obey her request." Yumi and Azzle pivot to behold the being, their expressions a mix of astonishment and reverence.
"Th-Thats..." Azzle stammers, his eyes wide.
With a graceful sweep of her arms, the being presents herself, as if revealing her true essence. "I am Cordelia—the guardian deity of this forest."
