Chapter 3

Who gets the drops?
Catherine, a bored wife.
It was Friday afternoon and Rick felt like a kid on the last day of school. He couldn't concentrate on anything but the clock, watching the seconds tick by till 4pm and trying desperately to hide his intense erection from anyone who happened by his desk. At 3:57 he finally shut down his computer and practically sprinted toward the parking lot.
A week earlier, when his wife first brought up DRP, he had been sure she was joking. After nearly a decade and half of marriage, he didn't think Catherine could still surprise him; she proved him wrong by immediately ordering a bottle.
"Aren't drops some kind of interrogation thing?" he asked. "Like, for spies and stuff?"
Now Catherine laughed. She explained the effects of the drops to him and the concept of "trust drops". "We'll have to work out the details of where I take it and make sure I'm in the same place when it wears off," she added. "Apparently people get really nauseated if they wake up in a different place or position than they were in when they blacked out."
Rick stared at his wife, only now realizing that not only was she serious, but she had already made up her mind. She was going to do this.
"Why?" he croaked. "Why would you-"
"Because I'm bored," she interrupted. "I love you, honey, and I love this life we've built for ourselves. We have incredible stability and security, but stability and security can get a little tedious. Don't you ever miss the thrill of our younger days, when we took risks?"
Rick honestly didn't, and he said as much. Catherine was unsurprised by his answer. "I know you don't, but I do. That's why this is perfect! I get the thrill of complete vulnerability, and you get... well, I've got some ideas, but I think it would be more fun to discuss them after I take the drop."
She had spent the following days texting him articles and videos from DRP users to whet his appetite. The tactic was extremely effective, and a disregard for speed limits and yellow lights turned his usual twenty-minute commute into thirteen. When he opened the front door, Catherine ran to greet him. She was wearing his favorite sundress and holding a small bottle with an eyedropper lid.
"You sure you want to go through with this?" he asked. "It's not too late to back out now. No shame if you lose your nerve."
"Are you kidding? It's all I could think about today." She eyeballed the bulge in his slacks. "Looks like you've been thinking about it too. Come on."
She took his hand and led him to the bedroom, where she laid down on the bed and checked her phone. She set two reminders, one for an hour and one for five minutes before the drop would wear off, then handed him the bottle. They were both trembling with anticipation, and Rick nearly dropped it. As he unscrewed the lid and pulled out the dropper, Catherine smiled.
"See you tomorrow," she said before opening her mouth. With a shaky hand, Rick hovered the dropper over her tongue and squeezed out a single droplet.
