Chapter 4

Now what?
Capture her
If you're being honest with yourself, you are curious about her. There's also something else beside that curiosity that you can't quite put a finger on.
Despite how intelligent she seems, you can't guarantee that showing yourself won't warrant an even longer chase. In the end, this is the best chance you've got.
As you silently circle around the opening, the hare enjoys her snack with happy little sounds, completely oblivious to your presence. You only stop when you can see her back, and the hunt begins as you approach from her blind spot.
One step out and you're in the open. Every movement you take thereafter is slow and calculated, your breath remaining on hold for most of the time. Before long, you're halfway there and she still has no idea what is coming.
This feels strangely exciting for you...
There's no reason to capture her other than to get a closer look, yet you can't recall a previous 'hunt' that has been as much fun as this. Soon enough, you're just a few steps away from her when her ears suddenly perk, and your heart starts racing as you speed up towards her.
You notice the confusion on the girl's face as she turns around, which becomes surprise upon seeing you. And not one moment later, shock as you wrap your arms around her.
"Gotcha. Just what the hell are you?" You ask gently, brushing her ears aside with your chin.
The hare hesitates a little when your chest squeezes her cheek, but then squirms weakly inside your embrace only to find her movement restricted. A small yelp of alarm involuntarily escapes her, with many more to follow as realisation settles in.
She has been captured... And you worry that if she doesn't stop making noise bigger trouble will find both of you.
Silence her?

A Hunter's Monster Tales
From your cabin
The world is changing. You can't remember the last time you've heard a wolf; the last time you've seen a fox or a rabbit. It feels as if the animals are going extinct. While your food reserves may keep in you good strength for months, and there is no lack of fruit and wild vegetables to forage, it's just... not the same. The mountainous terrain feels more foreign with each passing day. You've been a hunter your entire life, yet all of it feels useless now. Since the change has started taking place, your traps have remained untouched. Animal tracks no longer look like an animal's. Their paths seem to have purpose. They reason their decisions. And they're closing in on you.
