Breakfast and bed.

"Good morning, everyone," I said when I finally made my way downstairs after a much needed shower.

"Good morning, Uncle Ian," Adam chirped with a mouthful of scrambled egg.

"Morning, son," Piers greeted me with a knowing nod. I wondered if he knew that his daughter had gone up to my bedroom to wake me up? "You always sleep in on the weekend?"

"Um, yeah," I replied, making my way to the coffee maker to avoid eye contact with him. "Is there still stuff to move inside?"

"Yup," Piers replied, taking a sip of his coffee.

"Help yourself to pancakes, bacon, and eggs," Elizabeth said.

"Thanks, I'm famished!"

"Especially after last night!" Talia giggled but then yelped, which I assumed either Elizabeth or Amy had kicked her from under the table.

I had expected Piers give me the evil eye but he just continued to drink his coffee.

After scooping up a good helping of food onto my plate I sat down with everyone and started to wolf down my breakfast.

"Mommy, when can I choose my new room?" Adam asked.

"After you finish your breakfast, baby," Amy replied in a motherly voice we rarely heard.

"Okay!" Adam exclaimed and started stuffing his mouth with scrabbled egg.

"Slow down, kid, or you'll ****!" Piers warned.

The girls chitchatted about decorating the house while Adam, Piers, and I finished our breakfast in silence.

"I'm done, mommy!" Adam chirped, showing off his clean plate. "Can I go upstairs now?"

"Wait for Uncle Ian to finish and we'll go upstairs, okay?" Amy said.

"Okay..." Adam sighed, resting his chin on his folded arms and stared at me eating.

I took one last bite of my pancake and pushed my plate away. "I'm full! Thanks for breakfast, honey!"

"Let's go!" Adam cheered and dashed away towards the stairs.

"No running in the house!" Amy yelled.

"Well, I'm going to finally have some peace and quiet at my place!" Piers chuckled as he stood up.

The five us walked upstairs where we found Adam checking out the six bedrooms.

"This one is mine, Adam," Talia said, patting him on the head while he poked his head into her bedroom.

"Why do you live her, Auntie Talia?" he asked.

"The rent is cheaper here than my small apartment," she replied, "and Auntie Elizabeth cooks better than me!"

"Her pancakes are better than mommy's!" he nodded and went to the master bedroom.

"That's our bedroom," Elizabeth said as he went through the bedroom to check out the huge walk-in closet that was bigger than some apartments in Manhattan and then the ensuite.

"Is this a swimming pool?" Adam yelled from the bathroom.

"No, it's a whirlpool bathtub, baby," Amy answered. "Auntie Elizabeth soaks in it after a long day at work."

"Oh," the boy shrugged and walked into the shower and pressed his face against the glass.

"Okay, kid, let's pick out your room!" Piers ordered.

"Yes, Grandpa!" Adam cheered and ran out to follow his grandfather.

"How about this one?" Amy suggested. "It's has a nice view of the backyard and you'll be right next to my room."

"Okay!" the boy agreed and ran circles around in his new bedroom. "It's bigger than my old room!"

"With that settled, Ian and I will bring in the rest of the stuff while you girls unpack," Piers stated.

As soon as the front door closed behind us, Piers stopped and turned to face me. "Ian, I know why you slept in this morning and that's none of my business. That's between you, your wife, and Talia."

"Okay..."

"But now that my daughter and grandson are living here you better watch what you are doing," he stated. "I hate to see your pretty wife be a widow."

"Of course, sir," I nodded, not sure if his threat was entirely serious or not. I didn't want to find out.

"Good," he grumbled and walked off. "Let's bring the boxes in."

I stared at him for a moment, wondering if he would have had a nicer demeanor if I had married his daughter instead of Elizabeth, before following him to the U-Haul truck.
