Chapter 9 by dr_wankenstein dr_wankenstein

What's next?

Boo!

The lights snapped off again.

Something cold and slimy touched the nape of Amy's neck. And in her ear, close enough that she could feel its hot breath, a voice whispered "Boo."

Amy squealed.

There were only two things in the world that scared her. One was her recurring nightmare about accidentally going to work without any pants on and having the whole precinct laugh at her while Gina put the pictures on Instagram. The other was ghosts. Right now, ghosts scared her more.

She was halfway to the stairs before she realised she'd left her pants behind in the basement.

She was halfway up the stairs before she could think about where she was going. It was the middle of the day. Even though it was Halloween, the library would still be full of people. But at least it wouldn't be full of ghosts.

She was out the basement door before she could think twice. It slammed shut behind her, and she heard the distinct sound of it locking.

So, there she was. In the middle of the library. Which was, indeed, full of people.

Amy gasped, and jumped behind the nearest bookshelf. She was pretty sure nobody had noticed her yet. Which was good, for one very obvious reason.

She was looking out into the central hall of the library. A huge skylight shone down from above. Dozens of people were milling about, some of them dressed in Halloween costumes, others just wearing normal clothes. Shelves were arranged around the edges of the hall, with displays of horror novels on them.

Amy was crouched down behind one of the shelves. She tried to position herself behind the densest concentration of books, so nobody would see her through the gaps.

It was beginning to dawn on her that she might have made a tiny mistake.
