Chapter 12 by tslover69 tslover69

Onto the boat...

Boat to the island, and settling in

After the flight, it was a quick medical and a half day trip on the chartered boat to the island. He had met a few other of the participants on the ship, and they all had discussed their general excitement and anticipation about the hunt. Some were boasting about how they would spend the money, while others attempted to be helpful and trade camping and wilderness tips. There was a general feeling of excitement and nerves in the air. Some were more resigned and accepting to the true nature of the hunt, while others were in some sort of denial of the situation they were in. Not everyone was in a down-on-their-luck scenario like John, some participants were well-off in life but craved a challenge.

It's curious, the similarities in energy between those who have accomplished so much but still have unbound ambition to seek and overcome the next challenge; and those scrapping to get off the bottom and stay afloat by any means necessary.

Night had already fallen by the time the ship docked on Bear island. John suspected that this was intentional so that the "prey" could not get a good lay of the land. After shortly arriving, the participants were corraled into a flat, open section of the island where there were a collection of small huts. John was given his own hut and instructions that he should not wander outside of the huts area or face consequences, and that the hunt would begin shortly after breakfast the next day.

The hut itself was definitely more homey and cozy. In the hut was a simple lamp, a bed with no frame, and a small dresser to store any items. Laid out on the bed was a beige, island cloth uniform. A simple top and bottom that felt comfortable to the touch and without any frills. John did not mind the simple nature of the hut, as it had all the basics he needed, and the weather on the island was so agreeable. He could hear the waves crashing on the beach nearby, and there was a calming breeze blowing through the huts and rustling the palm trees nearby. John could get used to this simpler life, unfortunately he was here as a contestant and not a guest. He put on his island uniform, and sat on the edge of his bed deciding what to do next.

What does John end up doing?
