Batman makes steps to contain the lycanthrope threat.

Chapter 68 by gorel29 gorel29

Flying pat the freeway and deeper into the city, Batman made sure to not be seen and avoided attention despite being out in the day. He wasn’t used to working in the day time, but for now he had no choice, now that he fully understood his current nature and the nature of the vampires plaguing his city, the day time had surprisingly become the safest time for him. Parking the batcycle in an alleyway and pulling out a grappler out of his belt, the Dark Knight aimed high and fired a cable high into the rafters, propelling him rapidly into the air to get to the roof of a building ten stories up. Once inside via the escape stairs on the roof, Batman made his way through the hallways of the research facility, keeping himself hidden from other researchers making their rounds before he made his way to the lab he sought.

Dr. Kirk Langstrum

Sneaking into the lab and closing the door behind him without making a sound, he slowly crept his way towards the man typing away in front of the keyboard going over his research. “Dr. Langstrum…”

Nearly jumping out of his seat and spinning around in his chair, the tall thin man panted out in fright holding his chest like he was holding back a heart attack before calming down at the sight of the black cloak and cowl of the Batman standing in front of him. “Oh… It’s you, your associate told me you’d be coming, I’d expected you to knock at the door before entering.”

“I don’t want anyone else to know about what I’m asking of you Doctor.” Reaching into his belt, Batman produced three vials filled with blood and handed them to the researcher in front of him. “I’ve procured these from three subjects with lycanthropy.”

Snorting at the word, Dr. Langstrum observed the vials and set them on a rack nearby. “Really now? Perhaps you’d like me to research voodoo for you also?”

“I’m serious! There are werewolves out in Gotham… Among other things, I’m sure you will find the samples have interesting properties, I need you to find out as much as you can in the hopes of finding a cure.”

Straightening himself and reading Batman’s expressionless stare, Dr. Langstrum slowly realised the Dark Knight was not joking. Getting up from his seat, the doctor took one of the vials and prepped a slid to be used for a microscope, placing the slide under the lens and giving the small droplet of blood a look over. “Interesting… The amount of white blood cells is ten times that found in a human… And the cells are still active? How long ago did you take these samples?”

“Last night.”

Looking away to read Batman’s face, the doctor had no reason to doubt Batman’s answer as he looked back into the microscope. “This sample should be inert, the cells almost coagulated after just an hour but these are still behaving as if still in the body… How long re you giving me to find a solution?”

“I have no idea, but attacks are starting to increase, if you don’t find a solution soon, this city will be a graveyard in a week.”

Breathing deeply and exhaling at the information, Dr. Langstrum waving back at the Dark Knight with his free hand, his eye never leaving the microscope as he looked more closely. “I’ll try and find something for you.”

Turning around and leaving for the door, Batman gently opened the door without making a sound. “That’s all I ask.” Just as silently as he entered, Batman left without a trace, not even the other researchers knew he was there after he made his way back to the roof. Out in the open and reaching the ride side of his cowl to his communicator, Batman heard the brief beep of a phone link before he heard her voice.

“Oracle speaking; your line for future intel on incoming crime in Gotham, how can we make your tomorrow better?”

“It’s me…” Hearing a brief second of silence, Barbara spoke up again. “Hi boss, what do you need this early in the day?”

“Barbara, I want you to do something for me… No matter how ridiculous it sounds.”

“Sure boss? Want me to paint my bedroom yellow again like that Green Lantern fiasco?”

“First off I want you to buy cloves of garlic and lace them over your windows, then I want you to nail a cross to your front door, doesn’t matter where.”

“Really Bruce? What, are you telling me there are vampires in…”?

“Above all else DO NOT invite anyone into your home. EVER!”

There was a short moment of silence before Barbara answered back. “S-sure thing Bruce, I’ll have Dad get the stuff.”

“Good, I’m calling the others to do the same.”

Stepping over to the ledge of the roof, Batman cycled through his contacts; Dick, Jason, Helena, they needed to be made aware of the danger the city was in. Jason already had a run in with the growing werewolf threat, but Dracula and his two brides were the immediate threat. “Raz al Ghul…” He was going to have to be informed that the Count of Vampires had taken his daughter, he sent Alfred to be taken care of by him… But if he learned what happened to Talia, there was no telling what he would do. Hesitating briefly, Batman scrolled through his contacts and inhaled sharply before calling the Master of the League of Shadows.
