Author's Note: [Hiatus over, Kingdom is now active]

It brings me no pleasure to announce that Kingdom will be going on an indefinite hiatus. I have spent hundreds of hours writing this story, meticulously planning things out, planning out future story arcs, looking forward to the times when I get to introduce certain characters and show off my vision.

Over the past year, I’ve built up a community of people who seem to enjoy my work. It’s something I’m incredibly grateful for. To have all of you wonderful people reading my work and enjoying it, wanting me to release more, it makes me very happy. It brings me a lot of joy whenever somebody comments on my chapters and engages with the story, asks me about the lore or just tells me that they’re enjoying it.

I started writing Kingdom primarily for myself. I enjoy writing in general, and I love The Gamer setup, it’s a concept that has so many different possible ways to go, as is evidenced by the myriad of different versions of that setup that exist on Chyoa. I’m incredibly proud of this project so far. It’s my longest project by far. The posted chapters sit at a word count of 227,594, and I’ve currently written 268,841 words.

I figured I would share Kingdom with the world, in hopes that it might make somebody happy in the same way that reading the stories of others has made me happy. I hope I’ve been able to do that in the time that I have been posting.

I figured if it ever became too much for me, I would have to stop posting. Unfortunately, it has now become too much for me. I could reduce the frequency of my posting, but I feel I would be doing a disservice to you all if I did, and it would be ignoring the point anyway.

Over the past two months, life has drastically shifted for me. I’ve lost friends, I’ve had complications with family, and life has become much busier. My finances have gone from being in an exceedingly stable position, to now not so stable. I’m having to spend a lot more time working, and with everything else going on, it’s been quite stressful, especially due to the fact that I get chronic migraines and my autism and OCD means that I can’t work most regular jobs, so yeah.

My priorities have had to shift, and unfortunately, Kingdom is what’s on the chopping block.

This is not to say that I won’t ever come back to writing Kingdom, but it won’t be any time soon. I want to make sure that I can write with consistency first, pumping out a chapter every 3 days isn’t easy. I’ve been managing it up until this point, but due to my current life circumstances, I cannot manage it anymore.

I hope you all have enjoyed my work up until this point. You are all amazing people, and I love every single one of you <3

I’m leaving with a few gifts. First, the last chapter. I cried when I was writing it, I felt it was a beautiful encapsulation of why I’m writing the kind of story I am, with the setting of the Kingdom and the love felt between the characters. I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I did writing it.

Second, the models that some of the characters are based on. You don’t have to take this as gospel, but these are the people I had in mind when writing each of the characters. I had their appearances in mind when writing the characters, the personalities bear no resemblance to who they are as people in real life.

Thirdly, I’m opening this story up to anybody who wishes to continue it. As of now, it is set to moderated, and I will be online regularly to approve any new chapters. If I find that I’m unable to approve chapters quickly enough, I’ll set it to public.

If anybody has been wanting to write, but is nervous about it or doesn’t know where to start, take this as a sign to start. The best tip I can give you for writing is that you should write what you like to read, and that there are no rules! Write to your heart’s content, because every time a person expresses themselves and the ideas that are in their head, the world becomes a more colourful and interesting place!

Lastly, I want to recommend some more stories on Chyoa for further reading, some of which I took inspiration from. These are all stories that I feel, for one reason or another, are an incredible read and very much worth the time investment.

The Gamer, by TheDespaxas:

Funatic’s branch - The longest branch of the story, and one that I have taken heavy inspiration from. I used very similar systems to those in this branch. The protagonist of this branch can sometimes be a bit annoying, arrogant and occasionally misogynistic, but the lore is extremely deep and the story is interesting

TheDespaxas’ branch - The trunk of the story, and another very interesting branch. I took some inspiration from this branch too, and it’s a good read with interesting lore

Dadwood’s branch - Another good branch, not super long in comparison to the other branches mentioned, but interesting nonetheless. The protagonist in this branch gets into demonology, which is quite cool

Cliffe’s branch - This branch is interesting, but for different reasons than the others. The protagonist in this branch is a bit of a buffoon and tends to rush into situations headlong without thinking first, but that’s kind of the point, and one of the things that makes it fun to read. The lore is extremely interesting too and while I haven’t finished reading it yet, I highly recommend it
