That Went Better Then You Could Have Hoped
Ask Her to Stay, If She Wants
A weighted silence settles between you and Clara as you both sit amid the rumpled charcoal sheets, processing the monumental shift in reality. Outside, the London night presses dark against the windows, and somewhere in the flat you hear David moving around, probably making tea or finding something stronger.
"Clara," you begin, your voice still strange in your ears—deeper, more resonant than Mia's lilting tones. "Would you like to stay the night? Not for anything physical," you add quickly, seeing her expression. "Just to talk. To process all this."
She studies you, taking in the familiar eyes set in your now-masculine face. Her fingers twist in the edge of the sheet she's wrapped around herself.
"This is surreal," she finally says, voice soft but steady. "Forty-eight hours ago I was discovering my sexuality with a woman who never actually existed, and now..." She gestures vaguely at your transformed body.
"Mia existed," you counter gently. "She was me. Everything we shared was real."
Clara draws a deep breath, then releases it slowly. "I think I would like to stay, actually. Going home alone right now feels...I don't know, like I might wake up tomorrow convinced I hallucinated this whole thing." A small laugh escapes her. "Though I'm not sure I'll sleep much."
"We could talk in the living room if that's more comfortable," you offer. "I could put on some clothes, make coffee..."
"No, here is fine," she decides, surprising you. "It's too late for coffee. And honestly, I think I need to look at you—really look at you—to start processing this."
You nod, understanding her need to reconcile the person she's come to care for with the man sitting before her now.
"Can I ask you something?" Clara shifts, tucking her legs beneath her. "When you were Mia...did it feel like wearing a costume, or did it feel like you?"
You consider this carefully. "At first it felt alien. But then...it just became another version of me. I still had my thoughts, my memories, my core self. But I experienced everything through a different lens."
Clara nods slowly. "That actually helps, I think." She reaches out tentatively, her fingers brushing against your shoulder. "You're so warm. Just like before."
The touch sends a different kind of shiver through you—the contact familiar yet entirely new in your restored body.
"I don't know what happens next," you admit. "For us, I mean."
"Neither do I," she replies, but her hand remains on your shoulder. "But I'd like to figure it out. Somehow."
You settle back against the pillows, maintaining a respectful distance while still close enough to talk comfortably. Clara mirrors your position, and as the night deepens around you, words begin to flow more easily—questions about what you remember, what she felt, what it all means for both of you moving forward.
Sometime around four in the morning, her eyes begin to droop, and without discussion, you both slide down to lie properly on the bed, still talking in soft murmurs until sleep finally claims her mid-sentence. You watch her face in repose, marveling at how much has changed in such a short time.
You're not Mia anymore, but neither are you entirely the Matt who woke up Saturday morning. Something new has emerged from this extraordinary experience—something still taking shape between you and Clara in the quiet hours before dawn.
