Chapter 87 by Caesar25 Caesar25

What's next?

An old story...

{if Erik = true}At that moment, Erik steps to you two. He draws his sword, to which Robert does the same as he sees Erik. He shouts at Robert:

Erik: Hey, you there! Step away from the lady and put that sword down SLOWLY! Then, I might let your head stay where it is and only cut your hands off!

Robert: Erik Blondebeard?! What are you doing here?! Stay close to me Lady Lily, I'll not let this wretched northmen hurt you!

Erik: Don't listen to him Lady Lily, get away from him, he will only deceive you with his honeyed words!

Robert: So says the one, who knows nothing else only to raid defenseless towns and **** widowed women!

Lily: Enough of this both of you! What is all this commotion all of a sudden?! Explain yourselves, both of you!

Robert: Yes explain yourself, northmen!

Erik: If anybody has to explain anything, it will be you, traitor!

Lily: I said stand down already! Do I have to call in my men to hold you both back from killing each other for no reason?!

Erik and Robert: I have a good reason to kill him!

Lily: Yes, I see, you both want to do that... but no blood will be shed now! As I said, explain yourselves! And put those damned swords down already! Erik, you are my trusted bodyguard, tell me your part! How did you even come to know each other?! Why is he calling you a northmen?!

Robert: Because he is a godless pagan Viking, that is why!

Lily: You will have your time to explain your words Robert, but let Erik speak first!

Robert: Very well, let's hear the pagan out...!

Lily: Erik, are you a Viking? You have never told me anything about it!

Erik: Well, my name could have given you a clue... This is a long story my lady... It goes back to the time I met your husband, Lord Michael... I am one of three siblings, Sigrid was my older brother and Astrid is my sister. He and my father were always dreaming of rekindling the glory of the old Viking days of pillaging and raiding. We have been raised to be able to wield all sorts of weapons from an early age to be great warriors one day. Despite no Viking raids for more than a century, one day, my father organised a raid on German coastal cities, just like old times. All of our tribe followed him, I and Astrid too, despite we were barely as tall as our battleaxes! That was the day I killed my first enemy...

Robert: Defenseless civilians!

Lily: Let him speak!

Erik: I have regretted what we have done that day! There were no soldiers in that city! No glorious battles as my father and brother told us... I felt ashamed of what has happened, but the others loved the free loot they had gathered. We returned home as great heroes, my father told everybody how fiercely the Germans resisted us... But in reality there were nobody but fearful farmers and women trying to protect their children to their last breath... After those imagined tales, some even whispered my father might in time overthrow our king if his saga continues gloriously like that tale! "He will lead us all into a new golden age!" They said... Emboldened by this first success, my father organised such raids again and again every year. We ventured further and further south from the north German lands. And one day we found ourselves at the gates of a well fortified city. That was a raid we should have never attempted to do...

Robert: But you did...!

Erik: I was 25 at the time. I had hoped, finally my first glorious battle is ahead of me! We were all excited about that battle. We have stormed the city walls, managed to get atop them even... But soon we were **** to retreat, as our numbers were not enough to defeat the defenders. But they did not know that... We put our armours and those of the fallen on some bushes and makeshift scarecrows and had them stand around the city. The defenders were tricked into believing we were three times as many as we really were! Then came Robert... He was the captain of the defenders and offered to make peace. They would have paid us a hefty amount of gold and silver if we pulled back from the walls and leave their city and the surrounding villages alone for good. My father accepted and after we had our loot I had thought we were going home. But I was wrong... My father decided to look for easier prey, ravage the countryside and leave that walled city be, as he had thought the defenders would not dare to come out and face us in open battle. After we have burnt countless villages to the ground, my brother sent a message to Robert, asking for a great amount of gold in return for the villagers. When he arrived to the agreed place we left him with my brother to finish the bargain. But instead of handing over the promised gold, he brought his army of the city and had my brother shot with an arrow on the spot as he was standing there, defenseless and unarmed! Enraged, our clan attacked their army, but we were defeated... I had to run for my life, throwing my weapons and shield away to lighten myself for the flight... As far as I know, none of us survived, but me... Then in hiding, I was attacked by a few armed bandits on a road. They saw my Viking tattoos and wanted to have **** for their fallen friends in the nearby villages burnt by my clan. I tried to fight them off, but without weapons I had no chance. They wanted my **** to be a slow one, they were torturing me after binding me to a tree. Many passed by, but nobody cared, they knew I was a Viking and they were happy I got what I deserved... Until Lord Michael arrived. He was barely 15 but fought off the bandits and freed me, despite I was a Viking. He didn't care about me or my past, he said no man deserved to be treated like this. I told him of my story and swore to protect him from that day onward as a gratitude for saving me. He took me in and sheltered me. Nobody knew of my past, only him and Baron George. I had never thought I would see this man again...

Robert: But you do! You have taken so many lives, I can't believe how could anybody take you in!

Erik: I haven't! I stayed my blade from the flesh of the innocent! After my first kill, I have vowed never to kill anybody unarmed... You may not believe me, but that is the truth! On the other hand, you have killed my brother while he was unarmed under a flag of truce! That is at least as serious as the thing I have done!

Robert: Is that so? I have never heard of that part of the story... But I am not surprised you are ignorant of the whole truth of that day! Only if... if you truly were unaware of your father's action... Wait, could it be that you are speaking the truth? Is that so, that you do not know the full story?

Erik: Enlighten us! I would very much like to know why you had my brother shot!

Robert: I didn't! Allow me to tell you what really happened there! The city was under Templar control, we were conducting business from there. After we have paid you off and you left, we received news of your continued atrocities! When I got your brother's message as he was willing to hand over the villagers for the gold, I will not lie, I wanted to have him killed! We have just paid you a lot and you agreed not to hurt those people, but you did, nonetheless and asked for even more money for what we have already paid! Despite this, I wanted no more bloodshed, I collected the money and rode out. But as you Vikings have broken your promise that time, I didn't want to risk my live riding alone with the gold. When I met your brother, we were both unarmed. I was ready to give him the gold he had asked, but I wanted to see the villagers first... Then he pointed at a nearby small hill. As he was counting the gold, I sent one of my men to check on the villagers, to which he replied, they were all dead and put in a deep mass grave! Your brother laughed at it, and said "I have never said they will be alive, only that I will give them back to you!"... Enraged, one of my archers shot him right on the spot... I knew what was about to happen at that moment... As both armies went silent for seconds, I ordered my men to stay where they were, not wanting an other battle, but your father was so enraged, he ordered his men to attack us! Then we have killed off as many of you as we could, my men were just as enraged by the slaughter of those villagers as your people were by the **** of your brother! A few of your Viking got away, they fled back to their ships and sailed away at the midst of the battle, abandoning their comrades to their fate. Those who remained died to the last man.

Erik: The villagers were killed...? But... I was never told they were dead... Why would my father order such a thing...?!

Robert: If you were truly unaware of that, it could give some credit to your words. But I will still not trust you, heathen!

Erik: Nor will I trust you, Templar dog!

Lily: Alright, don't even get started again! I believe you both! Erik, you have served us faithfully for a decade now and never showed and sign of disloyalty! Robert, you have been looking for Sofia's order for some time, if you said the truth about that missing woman and wanted to protect me as you promised, you too have earned my trust. We have known each other only for a very short time, so you still have to work for me to fully trust you as I trust Erik.

Robert: I will not fail you my lady, my promise still stands, I will not let that crazy order hurt you!

Erik: The post of bodyguard is taken Templar, look for an other noble to serve!

Robert: If I remember, you were there for the whole time to protect your lady from Sofia, am I correct? Why haven't you done anything so far?!

Erik: I... I was unfamiliar with their religious beliefs... I still haven't embraced their faith, I didn't know they were doing it for other reasons than following their faith...!

Robert: And this is how you were protecting her for a decade now?! God damn miracle, she is still alive!

Erik: You won't be for long if you keep insulting me like that!

Robert: Yes, good, fight me, at least I will have a challenge after so many years!

Lily: Nobody will fight anybody here! If you both want to, you can both serve me, but promise you won't kill each other!

Erik: Fine, but I will keep my eyes on this Templar!

Robert: And I will keep mine on you, Viking!

Lily: Good, now that you are such good friends, let's get something to eat for dinner...!{endif}

{if Erik = false}{if Lord Michael = true}

At that moment, Michael steps to you two. He draws his sword, to which Robert does the same. He shouts at Robert:

Michael: Hey, you there! Step away from my wife and put that sword down SLOWLY! Then, I might let your head stay where it is and only cut your hands off!

Robert: What are you doing lord?! I was only having a small discussion with the lady!

Michael: Don't listen to him my love, get away from him, he will only deceive you with his honeyed words!

Robert: I am confused... Why are you threatening me? What have I done to earn this?!

Michael: The red cross on your armour... And you are called Robert... Aren't you the same man who defeated a Viking army 10 years ago?

Robert (still confused, but holding his sword high): Yes... yes I am, but what does it have to do with any of us?

Michael: My fried and bodyguard, Erik Blondebeard was one of the Vikings you have betrayed and attacked that day!

Robert: What?! Erik Blondebeard survived?! Is he here?!

Michael: No, he isn't here, but if he was, he would have killed you already! Unlike me, he prefers striking first and only talking after! Are you here to kill us too?!

Robert: So you are friends of him, aren't you?!

Michael: Yes, and I should kill you to honour him!

Robert: That man has no honour, he knows nothing else only to raid defenseless towns and **** widowed women!

Lily: Enough of this both of you! What is all this commotion all of a sudden?! Explain yourselves, both of you!

Robert: Yes explain the actions of your "friend"!

Michael: If anybody has to explain anything, it will be you, traitor!

Lily: I said stand down already! Do I have to call in my men to hold you both back from killing each other for no reason?!

Michael and Robert: I have a good reason to kill him!

Michael: Fine, but I will keep my eyes on this Templar!

Robert: And I will keep mine on you, Viking shelterer! Wait... where is he by the way? Why have you been speaking of him in past tense? Is he...?

Michael: Yes, he is dead. He was killed some time ago, he sacrificed himself to buy some time for us and the King Charles to get away in the crusades.

Robert: He was fighting in the crusade?! And he saved the king...?! Hm, maybe I have misjudged him... He might know honour and loyalty after all.

Michael: I can ensure you, HE DID!

Robert: Alright, alright! He is gone now anyway, so there is no need to have any conflict between us, isn't that correct? Let's get on with a fresh start and forget all that has happened!

Michael: Fine...

Lily: Good, now that you are such good friends, let's get something to eat for dinner...!{endif}{endif}

{if Erik = false}{if Lord Michael = false}

After further talks, you offer to show him around the manor. As you take him to the cemetery, to show Lord Michael's grave, he spots the one next to it... It is Erik's... Robert draws his sword and shouts at you:

Robert: Ah, so this is a trap then?! You wanted to have me killed in ****, isn't that correct?!

Lily: Robert, what are you taking about?!

Robert: You won't deceive me! I know too well who Erik Blondebeard was!

Lily: Who was he, that his grave so deeply concerns you?!

Robert: He was a honourless Viking who knew nothing else only to raid defenseless towns and **** widowed women!

Lily: This is nonsense! He was no Viking!

Robert: You won't trick me with that! His name is clearly a Viking name!

Lily: Could it be that...? He really was a Viking once...? That would explain his skills with the weapons... He never told me he was one!

Robert: So you did not know? In this case... Forgive me for my outburst. I just find it... "difficult", to forget what he and his clan has done in the past. I am surprised he survived though... But in the end, he got what he deserved!

Lily: How dare you speak of him like that?! He was a great and honourable bodyguard, he fought to protect us till the end!

Robert: Is that so? And why did he never tell you of his past then?

Lily: Maybe he was too ashamed of it...

Robert: That would be no surprise!

Lily: He had written about some of his older battles... Those texts are in the library, but I never read any of them... Maybe we can find out if you speak the truth!

Robert: Me? Of course I do! The only one hiding anything was your dear bodyguard! Let's see if we can find anything about his "greatness"!

You both enter the library and search for his texts. He has written a lot, you didn't even know... Robert says, it was expected, he was a Viking and wanted his saga to be remembered later... You read some of them and find out what Robert was talking about... You read it out loud, his saga says:

"Erik: I have had many battles. But there are none I am more ashamed of the ones I had in my youth... These go back to the time I met Lord Michael... I am one of three siblings, Sigrid was my older brother and Astrid is my sister. He and my father were always dreaming of rekindling the glory of the old Viking days of pillaging and raiding. Lily: Oh Erik... You could have told me...

Robert: He has taken so many lives, I can't believe how could anybody take him in! Little wonder he never told you any of it!

"Erik: I stayed my blade from the flesh of the innocent! After my first kill, I have vowed never to kill anybody unarmed... You, who are reading this, may not believe me, but that is the truth! Robert: If this is how he was protecting you for a decade now, it is god damn miracle, you are still alive!

Lily: Don't insult him like that ever again! He died a hero... He stayed behind to save King Charles enough time to get away on the last crusade!

Robert: He fought in the crusade?! Well... Maybe I have misjudged him after all...

Lily: He was a good man, regardless of what his clan might have done!

Robert: Very well, I shall not insult him ever again, as it seems I must have misunderstood his par tin all of this. Let us forget what has happened and focus on the future.

Lily: Good, now then, let's get something to eat for dinner...!{endif}{endif}
