Chapter 20 by Cham3leon Cham3leon

What song do you choose?

Ain't no mountain high enough

"Really?" Gabrielle raises an eyebrow, but a smile tugs at her lips.

"Ain't nothing wrong with a bit of old-fashioned charm, in my book," you grin.

You give the barman your song choice, and before long, you extend your hand to Gabrielle. She accepts it, though her elegant hand makes no effort to clasp yours as you lead her to the stage. As the recognisable bass intro starts, you bob your head to the rhythm, and Gabrielle rolls her eyes good-naturedly.

"Listen, baby;
Ain't no mountain high,
Ain't no valley low,
Ain't no river wide enough, baby,"
you sing, looking at Gabrielle, who watches you with an unreadable expression.

"If you need me call me,
No matter where you are,
No matter how far,"
responds the blonde, her voice crisp and clear as she sings the melody with unfaultable precision.

Soon you reach the chorus, and sing together. Maybe you're biased, but your two voices sound great together, although you are admittedly a little more... expressive than Gabrielle. As the song goes on, you take the liberty of adding Martin Gaye's embellishing 'woo'-s and 'baby'-s, really throwing your heart behind the words, beaming all the while at Gabrielle.

Your infectious smile eventually gets to her, and as the final chorus arrives she joins you in throwing everything into the words.

"Don't you know that there
Ain't no mountain high enough,
Ain’t no valley low enough,
Ain’t no river wide enough,
To keep me from getting to you, babe!”

You both lean into your mics, and towards each other, as you dance to the classic melody. Gabrielle seems to be finally lowering a few of her barriers, singing her heart out with you. You sing the last words together, and throw your arms out triumphantly as you receive a smattering of applause and cheers from the room. Gabrielle laughs, somewhat breathlessly, and you can’t help but grin back, wiping the perspiration from your forehead.

The two of you return to your table, and listen to a few more songs, commenting on what’s a fun song pick, who’s good at singing, who’s really not good, and everything else, as you both catch your breath.

Your meals finished and your breath spent, the two of you pay up and head outside.
