God this is irritating. “Okay, yes, I’m here to help you. Whatever it is, I’m in.” As soon as I say it, I fear that I have over committed.

“You can prove it by being sure she gets to and from the gala safely.”

“Do you mean I should be her chauffeur?”

“Precisely. I’ll suggest it to Vikki.”

I don’t have time to work out the ramifications of this, but it feels like trouble. “Alight. Yes, I can do that for you.”

"No—you will do that for Vikki to make up for last time. I need something else from you.”

“Oh?” No, it feels like a noose is being laid around my neck.

“Vikki still refuses to tell me about her dating life, but she did slip up, leading me to believe that she has a date for the gala that she has set her sights on. You can prove to me your intentions by getting me some details about who this person is. As her chauffeur, you should be able to help me with that.”

“I see... That sounds doable.” I would like to know who the date is as well.

“Very well. Then I will tell you some of what I learned at brunch. I might have more to tell once you identify who her date is, although it might not be helpful if you take too long.”

I roll my eyes at this haggling. “Okay, let’s hear it.”

Penelope makes it brief.

”You are about to get shit-canned.” She gives me time to let the words burn in. “But I’ll give her some reasons to hold onto you for at least into next week. You just focus on being her chauffeur, and perhaps if gala night goes well enough for her, she might change her mind.”
