Penelope’s voice sharpens. “Before we get to that, I have some concerns about where your intentions lie, Warren.”

I take a deep breath. “How so?”

“It appears that Vikki was seriously hungover the day after your dinner. I thought I was clear that you were to prevent such an outcome.”

Crap. I’m busted. “I took her keys and drove her home safely, just like you asked.”

“If that was the only thing you heard me ask of you, perhaps you aren’t suited to be her assistant after all.” Damn it. I can't afford to have her turn against me now. "And she could only remember fragments of what happened that night. Do you care to fill in the blank spots?"

"That would take too long. I'm at the gym right now...” I don’t want to know what fragments she remembers. I had better push back. “Pardon me for saying so, Penelope, but your daughter is a really difficult drunk to deal with...” I sense Penelope about to cut in so I press onward. “So now, having dealt with it, I better understand what you were trying to avoid... I should have taken your request more seriously."

Penelope is quiet for a long moment. "Victoria has a hazy memory of you giving her more wine. If I can't trust you, our deal ends."

"Penelope, I—"

"However, if you want to know what we talked about during brunch, you should think hard about re-earning my trust. What do you think, Warren? Can you do that? Do you understand what I am offering?”
