“Hey, man. How you been?” Lewis looks a little more rested than usual.

“Crazy as ever.” I give him a heavy plastic bag. “This is a donation from your mom.” She had gathered up some food from her pantry when I returned the van.

“Nice!” He takes the bag and peeks inside approvingly. He glances up with a bemused look. “Why were you at my mom’s?”

“Borrowed the van mostly.” He probably doesn’t want to hear the rest. “How’s work?”

“Ah. The warehouse is a fucking zoo. I’m busy working too much overtime to have a life. It is wearing on me, man. I need a social life again. And a girlfriend.”

I notice Lewis’ face is a little tanned. “You look like you got some sun.”

“Yeah, at my dad’s place. He’s got a pool so we spent a day swimming...” Lewis‘ face twists oddly as his words fade.

“What?” His face only twists harder. He looks pained. “Are you having a stroke? What is it??”

He closes his eyes and sighs. “Okay... dude? You can’t repeat what I’m about to tell you, alright?” He stares at me until I look him in the eyes and respond.

He winces as he continues,” I didn’t realize how hot my step-mom is until I saw her in a bikini.”
