Advanced Enchantment Techniques 2 – Matrix Extraction

Uklag waits for a few more moments before continuing his lesson. “So, to get back on track: Matrix Extraction.” He says and takes the block that he has used for the first example of the ground, the fire was extinguished a few moments ago. “Matrix Extraction is limited in its uses but it is good to know about it in case an item you fancy gets physically damaged. There is also the possibility to use it when merging two enchanted items together, generally talking it is easier to simply merge the two with simple transmutation though.”

Grabbing another piece of wood and quickly transmutes it into a block similar in shape to the one in his hand. “Now I want you to watch very closely, Matrix Extraction can be very beautiful.” He leaves the new block lying on the table and puts both of his hand around the already enchanted piece. “First you try to capture the magical matrix of the item in your mind, this varies in difficulty depending on the item.” Small lines glow on the surface of the block, they all meet around the runes. “Once you have done so you eliminate the physical object around it.”

The block crumbles to ashes within seconds. At any other time Dorian would have likely complained about the waste on his floor but what he sees keeps his mind busy. The block has left behind a violet copy of itself made out of many little lines of energy. It doesn’t look solid in the least, too much space lies between any of the lines but the outline of the original is still clearly visible.

“And thus you have successfully extracted the matrix. Now you can either let it go, the arcane will disperse within seconds, or imbue another item with the matrix.” Uklag turns around and pushes the construct of light into the block on the table. “The matrix will attempt to recreate the form of the original in an undamaged state, this is why you can repair items this way – provided you have the necessary materials.” As he says that the block shapeshifts a slight bit and true enough it looks like the original within moments.

“Now, Dorian please put some power into the item again.” Uklag says. The mage looks at the second block still in his hand and pours a trickle of magic into it. The block on the table spews out a tiny flame. “The link still works, the extraction was successful.” Uklag yawns. “Hurray.” He turns back to his listeners. Catherine seems also somewhat bored by all of this. “There is no other usage for this then looking pretty and repairing things?” she asks. “Not really. If you master the extraction it is said that you can store enchantments in unfitting containers like scrolls or something and re-extract them at a later time. Personally I can’t find much usage in that so I never bothered to waste much time on it.”

Catherine nods, Dorian just seems happy to have learnt something. With that lesson out of the way Uklag shows a wide smile. “Now to my favourite lesson, get ready for some gloating, kids.” Dorian mumbles something about being 47 years old. “Because now we break the rules of magic.”
