A surprise with Dani

When you got the extensive liner notes from Dani, you knew this plan was killer. There was a week of nervous preparation, but now, you find yourself waiting outside of a classroom, carefully watching the stream of students making their exit. Finally, you spot Matt, and you wave at him, calling his attention. Matt frowns at you.

“Hey, aren’t you that guy… that guy that Dani keeps hanging out with?”

You give him an apologetic smile.

“Yeah, about that,” you say. “Dani wanted to apologize to you. She’s sorry that we had to put up such a ruse.”

“What do you mean?” he asks, clearly confused.

“Come with me. She’s got something to tell you,” you say, heading off towards the quad.

Matt follows in tow, a frown on his face.

“This better not be a prank.”

You only give him a mysterious smile, coming to a stop in a grassy spot. A couple of students are milling around, seemingly doing nothing—fiddling on their phones, glancing at each other, holding a strange amount of math-related paraphernalia…

All of a sudden, three clear notes ring out, and they leap to the side, revealing a certain buxom blonde in the middle that takes both your and Matt’s breath away. Dani bursts into song, the backing track to Bruno Mars’ playing in the background.

I got contours in manifold,

Looks fit for a centerfold.

The proof don’t have to be cited.

Dani’s dressed in a silk button down with stripes, rocking black pants and shades. All the other students throw off their jackets, revealing that they're dressed in the same outfit too, and the sudden flash mob draws looks from all across the quad.

“Holy shit, this is bonkers! This is wild! This is mindblowingly awesome!” Matt says, and you stifle a laugh, holding up a phone to record his reaction.

All the dancers—including Mars, Val, Christina, Ruby, Vignesh, and a few other friends that you invited for the plan—are popping with those trademark rhythmic moves (even if some of them are clearly more talented than the others). Of all of them, Dani is the clear superstar. She’s fully in her groove, busting moves you wouldn’t have thought possible, the mic up close to her mouth and lyrics flowing smoothly from her lips as she hits the verse:

Compact sets shining so bright

Sequences converging just right

Lucky for you, Matt’s what I like, Matt’s what I like,

Lucky for you, Matt’s what I like, Matt’s what I like…

The innuendo in her prior lyrics give way to a far more direct expression as she dances her way to the front of the crowd, suddenly pulling up to a stop before Matt. The music cuts out and the dancers all point towards Dani—not that anybody needed the clueing in—when from some pocket she produces a heart shaped card.

“Matt, will you go out with me?” she asks.

The guy is clearly starstruck. His hands, not hers, are the ones that are trembling as he accepts the card.

“Gee, Dani, I… I never knew you were so talented! Those dance moves were something else, really,” he says, to a confused expression on her face. And then, suddenly realising that he hasn’t given her an answer, he wraps her in a hug and says: “Yes! Yes, of course I’ll go out with you! God, you’ve no idea how much I’ve wanted to do this, only I wasn’t sure…”

She laughs and hugs him back, saying: “Oh my god, I am so relieved too. You have no idea how much work we put into this… I’m so glad that it worked out.”

“Oh man, so am I,” he says, and you smile as they kiss for the first time.
