A small ornate ring

Staring into the eyes of the smug grinning shop keeper, Allisa thought for a moment about rejecting the gift. However, the mental reminder of her current lack of mana weighed heavily on her mind. Making any actions towards antagonizing the shop keeper, who Allisa has no doubts possess several more dangerous magic items on his person, was a dangerous move on her part.

Allisa could if she focus, sense the faintest trace of magic originating from inside the box, raising her cautiousness about this so called gift. Sighing Allisa reluctantly opened the box, only to find a small ring in the center of the box.

"A little gift to show my appreciation for your hard work. You've surpassed all of my expectations" The shop keeper yapped on.

Allisa starred at the ring, it was quite plain. Just a band of metal with a engraving written on it, the source of magic.

"I can sense this ring has magic in engraved into it" Allisa pointed out, cautious about accepting the gift let alone wearing it.

The shop keeper, hands in his pockets without missing a beat "Of course, this ring used to be part of a pair. A married couple would wear the ring and know at all times where the other wearer was and if they were safe" he explained.

"I take it you don't have the other ring?" Allisa guessed.

Shaking his head a bit too quickly "Sadly not, likely it was destroyed. Otherwise I wouldn't give it to you. This ring is ultimately useless"

On the surface of it, it was a reasonable argument. However something seemed fishy, this shopkeeper didn't seem like someone above scamming someone and selling a useless product.
