Chapter 15
by FlightoftheBeers
Tying up loose ends.
A not-so-difficult conversation.
"We need to talk." You had been prepared to say those words first, but Tegan spoke first. The two of you had been sitting in uncomfortable silence in the living room for almost half an hour. "Before you say anything, just listen, okay?"
Did she know? How did she find out? Did Jake tell her? Did Dillon? "You've been working a lot. I know you've been really busy, but I've been lonely, and, well..." She looked off to the side. "I met someone."
What?
She read your face and continued, "please don't look at me like that. I know. I'm sorry, it's just... I've never felt the way she makes me feel before."
"She?" You piped up.
Tegan squirmed in her chair, "Lauren. Our nextdoor neighbor... It started as us just hanging out... Then our conversations got deeper... Once you started working more, I made a mistake and we kissed and... I'm so sorry, John. I'm a horrible wife!" She took out a manilla envelope and set it in front of you. "Here, I've already signed the divorce papers... I know this is a lot, but I want, no, need to be with her. I never knew I was into women, but Lauren—"
You couldn't help it. You started to laugh. You laughed harder and harder, crying from laughter. Tegan looked on with an almost horrified worry. "W-why are you laughing at me?"
You tossed the your manilla envelope in front of her as well.
"Y-you knew? You knew and didn't say anything? I'm so—"
"No, Tegan. That's not it."
You explained everything to her. It seems like you both had similar stories; once you were left to your own devices in town, you naturally drifted apart. Perhaps it was simply the proximity and familiarity that had kept you two together for so long.
But once you moved back to town, the two of you explored and both of you found a real love. "We're both horrible people," you said after a moment of silence.
She laughed, still teary-eyed. "Yea, we are."
The divorce was amicable. You kept the house and, well, Tegan moved in with Lauren right next door. Despite everything, the two of you wanted to remain friends. After all, you were still pretty close.
But that also left a spot in the house for your new bride. Aubrey didn't hesitate to leave her downtown apartment to move in with you. Despite the the uphill battle it had taken to get here, you two had finally made it.
