(Mis)Fortune Cookies

The dusty shop smelled of old paper and cinnamon, tucked between a boarded-up laundromat and a payday loan place that never seemed to open. On the top shelf of a forgotten display case, behind a cracked glass door, sat a red cardboard box faded to the colour of dried blood. The label, written in peeling calligraphy, read: Lóng de zàofù (The Dragon’s Fortune).

Inside were some fortune cookies, each perfectly round, golden-brown, and slightly warmer to the touch than they should have been.

But these were no ordinary fortune cookies.

Baked under a blue moon by a baker who’d traded his soul for the recipe, each cookie contained not a prediction, but a command. A wish. A key to reality itself.

When eaten, the fortune inside would come true, literally, immediately, and irreversibly. “You will find unexpected wealth” would fill your pockets with cash… but perhaps from your mother’s stolen life savings. “Someone is secretly attracted to you” might summon your boss’s lust… or the neighbor’s dog’s. The magic was literal, hungry, and loved irony.

The cookies did not care about consequences. They only obeyed the letter of the fortune, never the spirit.
