Chapter 9 by nbody95 nbody95

Night passes...

...and a new day dawns.

You awake the next morning with a smile. Sure, you probably could have used more sleep than you got, but you aren't complaining. Vanessa is already up and nearly dressed. She tosses you a teasing glance over her shoulder as she pulls her latex pants over her tight ass.

"Come on, Hotshot, time to get to work."

You laugh and start dressing, silently thanking whoever designed the the cryo-wear to be so form-fitting. You finish dressing and emerge from the tent, seeing the rest of your group groggily stepping into the morning. Alyssa was apparently the first to wake up, and has taken it upon herself to set up a picnic style breakfast on a blanket in the middle of your makeshift tent city. Everyone grumbles their thanks and eats in relative silence as you all struggle to fully wake up. Vanessa is already sitting between Mike and Alex, so you plop down next to Will and scarf down your morning ration. After a little while, Alyssa speaks up.

"So, I couldn't really sleep last night. I woke up at like 3 this morning and figured I'd get a head start on planning for the day. I wrote out a list of activities I thought we should take care of before dark. I found some paper and a pen and wrote out a list. We can tackle them in groups of 2-3 so we can get more done with the time we have. I don't really think it's safe to go out at dark just yet until we know more about this place. The first thing on the li-"

"So you just took supplies from the ship without asking to make a list you aren't even sure anybody wanted?"

You look around to see Alex at his feet, shooting an incredulous look at Alyssa.

"Supplies? What supplies did I take?"

"You used a paper and pen without asking us if we even wanted your list. How do you know we'll agree?"

"It's one piece of paper, Alex. I don't think it's a big deal."

"It's one piece of paper TODAY. What are you writing on tomorrow? Or the next day? Or the day after that? We don't have replacements for anything we use right now. We can't waste anything."

"Well I'll consider that next time, but for now, since I already wrote it down, the first thing - "

"The first thing we're gonna do is strip paneling off of the ship to build a barrier between our tents and the wildlife. We can't have anything creeping up on us at night."

A couple of people start to get up, when Alyssa cuts back in.

"Uh, what do you think you're doing, Alex?"

"I'm giving instructions."

"That's great. I already made a list. And that wasn't on it."

"Well, since you like wasting ink and paper, go ahead and add it in as item 1."

"No, I don't think we need that. I spent a long time making this list. Who put you in charge all of a sudden?"

"I did."

"Well sorry, but that's not gonna cut it. We're not wasting half a day building a wall out of scrap metal when we don't even know what the wildlife here is even like. Maybe there aren't any predators around. Or maybe there are, but they burrow, or fly, or jump, and a wall isn't going to stop them, which is why we'd be better off searching the ship for plasma rifles, aka item 3 on my list, which you'd know IF you'd at least let me read it before flying off and doing your own thing!"

The last part clearly caught Alex off guard, and Alyssa takes his stunned silence as an opportunity to begin reading off her list:

1) Check for any interstellar transmitters that might be intact

2) Secure supplies against weather and wildlife

3) Search the ship for plasma rifles & ammunition

4) Perform diagnostic checks on ship systems to see if anything is salvageable

5) Find additional changes of clothes for each group member

6) Hike the surrounding area and get the lay of the land

You look around and see the rest of the group nodding silently. Alyssa clearly put some thought into this list. Alex looks around exasperated, but knows he already has lost. Alyssa smirks and looks around.

"Alright, so we have six tasks. I've thought things through, and I think that we should have 3 groups of 3, each taking care of 2 tasks. Group 1 will handle items 1 and 4. Group 2 will handle 2 and 5. Group 3 will take the rest. Anybody have any preference on their task?"

Silence.

"Alright, fine. I'll pick. Ben, Will, you two seem like the outdoorsy type, and I know the two of you are close enough to have each other's backs if things get hairy out there. I'll have you go in group 3. You good with that?" The last sentence is phrased almost more like a command than an actual request. Thankfully, Alyssa's right. You ARE the outdoorsy type, and you're itching to get a look at the planet.

Accept the assignment?
