You meet Mary Forbes with Nurse Julie

"Well, that went fast," Mary says, putting away the last folded sheet. "Bless you, Gloria, and what was your name again, hon?"

"Julie," she says. "Julie Paul, I'm a nurse working with Gloria."

"I'm grateful for your help. The old washer chose the worst time to burn its bearings, with my man back on the road, and the girls back from college with all their dirty laundry."

"Oh, that's precious," Mary says. "I was hoping you'd find some nice ladies, Gloria, maybe a steady girl." She looks at your hands, regarding Julie's wedding ring and yours. "You still getting it from your husbands, huns?"

You nod. "Mm-hm," Julie says.

"That's best," Mary says. "A woman should cleave to her husband, or just not even marry." She shakes her head. "I always feel like things are right in the world when Brian's giving it to me good. Well, my man goes wandering regardless, when he's out on the road, but we have an agreement. If he gets to, then I do." She looks at the clock on the wall of the laundromat. "That did go fast. I'd be pleased to accept lunch."

You go to a café on the edge of downtown specializing in Tex-Mex. Julie has a margarita. You have an iced tea. Mary has iced tea with lemonade and spoons extra sugar into it.

"I was wondering, Mary, if I..." you start.

"We!" Julie jumps in.

You continue. "If we could thank you personally for the world you've opened up for me..."
