Chapter 7 by Icequeen52 Icequeen52

Perhaps some racing?

You bet!

I pull up alongside her. She rolls down her window and I do the same.

'Twin turbocharged 3.8L V6.' She says proudly, patting the door. I grin. 'Supercharged 6.2L V8.'

'Should be an interesting contest.' Hailey says. I snort.

'There won't be a contest, I'm too inexperienced to push it.'

She chuckles. 'You'll get comfortable pushing it quicker than you think, since there's no other cars around, you can just focus on driving.' She says.

I nod. 'True. Where are we going?' I ask. Hailey thinks for a moment. 'What's our next priority?' She asks.

I ponder our options for a few seconds. 'Electricity. We need to rig a way to keep electricity flowing to places we need. Solar panels should do.'

'I know a place where there's a few shops that sell solar and electrical equipment?' She says. 'Lead the way.' I say, nodding.

She smiles and rolls up her window, revving her engine and setting off.

I roll up my window and follow quickly, my V8 making a deep, pleasant roaring sound.

Hailey drives quickly, but slow enough to let me follow. I do my best to keep up, pushing my new car as fast as I dare. The speed and power at my fingertips is thrilling. Exhilarating. Intoxicating. The roar of the engine and bursts of speed every time I put my foot down. I can see why people get addicted to this. I'm focusing so hard on driving that I don't realise we're already here.

Hailey slows down and stops, and I park my car next to hers, turning off the engine and getting out of the car. 'Holy shit that was insane!' I say. Hailey laughs. 'Fuck yeah it was!' She turns to the shop and starts to walk towards the door. She pushes, then tugs on the handle. It doesn’t budge.

I note that I can’t see the hinges on the side of the door, meaning they’re on the inside. I gesture for her to move, which she does. I step forward with more confidence than I feel and lash out with a kick. By sheer luck, I hit the door close to the lock and manage to break through the mechanism. The door swings wide open.

‘After you, m’lady.’ I say, jokingly. ‘What a gentleman.’ She replies, giggling. The sound is like music to my ears, and I glow inwardly at her words.

Inside, we find all manner of electrical supplies. Everything we could need.

But as we pick up the first solar panel, we realise we overlooked something. Neither one of us has the space in our cars to transport anything more than a few solar panels and some smaller things like cables and capacitors.

We agree that I’ll try to find a truck to use while Hailey gathers up everything small we need. I walk outside and lady luck seems to be favouring me today. Parked in the car park of the place is a pair of pickup trucks. Not exceptionally big, but they’ll do. Hailey and I can always make more than one trip after all.

What's next?
