Mary heard the officers feet pounding after her. She really didn't need any police involvement right now, not only because of her current predicament, but because of her embezzlement. The heels were really slowing her down, but she didn't have the time to take them off.

When she came to the end of the alley she ran straight out into the street to the sounds of brakes squeeling and horns honking. She knew where she was, just two blocks from home! "Thank god" she gasped. "Stop, police!" the winded cop called from behind her. "Shit" Mary said, starting to run again. She never looked back to see where the cop was, figuring she could lose him in her apartment building.

As Mary hurtled towards her building she started mentally cursing herself. The doorman knew who she was! She stopped just long enough to say, "Cover for me and I'll make it worth your while" and was off again, into the building.

Mary hesitated momentarily before slamming the elevators call button. No way she could get up the fourteen floors to her apartment fast enough in heels. The cop came staggering up, and just started to open the lobby door as the elevator arrived. "Stop" he called exhaustedly.

Mary paid him no mind and darted into the elevator. She pounded on the door close button, but there was no need. The cop wasn't halfway across the lobby before she was on her way up. The elevator chimed signaling the fifth floor, when the phantom mouths came back.

"Not now" she cried exasperatedly, but they were more insidious than ever, and she was squirming in no time. 'At least I made it to the fourteenth floor without any other passengers getting on' she thought to herself. When the doors opened on the fourteenth floor, she staggered drunkenly out and steadied herself against the wall.

She made her way down the hall that way and when she came to her apartment, she turned the doorknob. Locked.
