Chapter 5 by Celina_ Celina_

Did you pay attention to what was going on?

Yes, what was going on here?

“Shush shush now, it’ll all come clear to you soon. Heeeere we go”

The rapid tapping sound of fingers dancing on a nearby keyboard reached me. A few seconds later sunlight flooded in over my vision, and I frantically tried to blink the light away, even though all I wanted to do was embrace it with open arms – at one hand I was so relieved to finally regain my sight; on the other, the intensity of it stung and made my eyes water. Continuing unperturbed Toshi stated in the same exhilarated tone of voice:

“Beautiful, just beautiful” that widening smile on his lips would’ve been more comforting if he had actually been looking at -me- and not his stupid laptop, which was receiving an inappropriate amount of attention considering my given state, why wasn’t he looking at me? My eyes flicked left and right, but I remained completely motionless save for this little grace.

“Just activated the chip I’ve implanted in your cerebral cortex, this is awesome Kiyomi. Now I’ll have to run some tests, it’s very important that you tell me how you feel – I’m enabling the motor cortex functions with limited usage, I can’t have you running away on me now can I?”

Normally I can’t stand rhetorical questions, but at this point that was the last thing on my mind. Having studied medicine on Tokyo’s University for the better part of three years, a few tidbits of information associated with the cerebral cortex registered in my consciousness. It’s the sheet of neural tissue that is outermost in the cerebrum of the human brain – playing a key role in memory, perception, language and consciousness. 'fuck, was he talking brain surgery?!' another few tapping sounds broke the silence.

Without warning I was suddenly able to turn my head and focus properly on Toshi. His tussled black hair hanging down over those large Harry Potter glasses as he stared absorbedly at his screen. Tapping away at the keyboard with a speed that still surprised me after three years of studying with him. He should’ve been in the Faculty of Technology, not Medicine. He’s a wizard with computers, but scores an F on People-skills; and I’ve always felt medicine requires the latter more than the former.

“Stressed? Your vitals are looking good, but I’m picking up a lot of beta waves from the inbuilt EEG system” he was tapping a finger against the screen, still not bothering to look at me. I couldn’t help but feel infuriated despite my helplessness, I know it’s not really important in this given situation… maybe I just needed something, anything, to distract myself from this god-awful situation.

“H-help me!” my voice seemed only a faint squeak, but I could speak again – thank the heavens for that small relief. Finally he turned to look at me, those brown eyes staring almost proudly at me while smiling that archetypical juvenile smile that was a tell-tale sign of overconfident young men.

“I am. Now, this might require some explaining but I’d like to direct your attention to your right before I proceed. It’ll make it easier on us both”

Did you look in the indicated direction or do something else?
