Thinking quickly, Jane moved her free hand to her chest. Years of training meant that the woman knew exactly where all of her gear was on her body. She quickly found one of her sharp five-pointed throwing stars. She could barely see her opponent in the darkness, but she knew it was there bearing down on her. She gripped the steel weapon tightly in her hand and thrust it into the blackness above her.

Jane felt the weapon sink into whatever was above her. The tough hide threatened to stop it's progress, but Jane pushed hard, pressing the points of the star into her gloved hand. A moment later, Jane's fist was pushing into the thing still holding the star. It happened so quickly that the creature didn't react until Jane's knuckles were pressed hard against its skin.

A screech of pain like metal scraping across metal erupted from the creature above Jane's face. It's hot breath sprayed spittle against her skin as it screamed. The monster instinctively recoiled from the injury and Jane was able to climb back to her feet.
