Chapter 14

What tool can help you?
With your knowledge, the voice modulator is sufficient
With your arms restricted by Au Revoir's hold, the sleeping powder that ought to be your best tool in this situation was kept away from you. You could probably pinch the vial in your fingers, but getting it out of your pocket and then dispensing the powder would be nearly impossible. You could, however, press your finger down upon the top button of the voice modulator in order to dispense a message.
You had to imagine that if Au Revoir was under the effects of Bound Blood or some additional cocktail of gene altering drugs, you could control her if you had the right voice to use against her. With how long Au Revoir had been away from Adder and no signs that she'd been in direct, lasting comments with any of its members, you had to assume that whoever was behind her manipulation, they weren't any of the higher-ups you currently had stored in your voice modulator. Trying out the captured Adder Adjutant's voice would just be a waste.
Whoever was controlling Au Revoir was someone with whom she experienced constant communication-- someone who'd been with her for a long enough time to have controlled her to commit the murder of the third Ciao, your direct predecessor. That really ruled out everyone but each of the Goodbye Girls. Had you ever seen an instance where the other Goodbye Girls controlled Au Revoir in some way? She'd always been a bit of a loose cannon and it didn't seem like any of them had the reigns on her. Remembering back to the Deliverers, she'd wanted to go through the front with no regards to Despedida's tools. In the mission with Vaarvel, she'd run ahead of the cool-headed agent several times. Even during other lesser missions, she'd pretty much made her own rules with such blatant disrespect for protocol or her own safety that it was hard to imagine anyone guiding her actions.
Still, it was such a small selection of people that you had to try that at the very least, you could run through them quickly. In sequence, you pressed the command for "Stop" in everyone's voice. Despedida's, then Tschau's, then even her own. She finally seemed to grow suspicious when she heard her own voice come from your pocket. "Little Ciao... Are you scheming something-?" she managed to ask, before finally, Vaarvel's voice entreated her, commanding her to cease. To your surprise, you felt her arms weaken their hold around you. Feeling encouraged, you pushed the button a few more times to continue projecting the voice, until finally, she completely released you and stepped aside. The blank look on the visible part of her face told you all you needed to know: this wasn't a sense of duty or loyalty, nor a vague confusion that she was experiencing. Somehow, she'd been genetically controlled to heed Vaarvel's instructions. Thinking back, you could remember a handful of odd instances where the woman had acted oddly in response to Vaarvel's words. Soft evidence was hardly important now: all the hard evidence you needed was right in front of you.
Still, even with undeniable proof that Vaarvel had been manipulating Au Revoir's actions, you couldn't believe it. What were her intentions? With this, it seemed clear that she'd controlled Au revoir to kill the third Ciao and, ultimately, to steal a Gambit, fly to London, and ransack the science department's genetic engineering division. To what end? The easiest answer seemed to be some association with Adder. Au Revoir had worked for Adder before; it could be that Vaarvel was also a high ranking officer from Adder-- a double agent-- who'd had her hooks in Au Revoir for a long time, sabotaging the Goodbye Girls from within. Still, she'd done so much to combat Adder during the team's existence. Both had, really. Why the sudden change?
If you had a better archive of Vaarvel's voice recordings, you could force Au Revoir to answer, but as it stood, your remote voice modulator was only so versatile. You set it back into your pocket, then began to question Au Revoir directly, hoping that the vague "stop" command would be enough to keep curbing her violence. With one sweeping arm, you indicated for the scientists to make a run for it, then you asked your teammate: why had she attacked CEDIT London?
"... To destroy genetics research-- coding on-par with Adder's own efforts," Au Revoir answered in an almost dream-like state. Her huge, muscular body stood stiller than you'd ever seen it.
With a stern expression, you asked her to clarify: why would she want to destroy that research?
"I hate genetic coding. Once I learned of it I wanted to destroy it," she answered, suddenly clenching her teeth again in anger. That answer made sense; after all, who had been affected more by genetic alteration experiments than she had? You'd learned that Au Revoir had lost her sense of self and identity to Adder's science. The super-soldier was unknown parts herself and Adder's guinea pig.
But still, something didn't add up. Vaarvel must have told her about it and brought her here, but surely, she recognized there were better ways to go about this, didn't she? Did Vaarvel actually control her to come to London and lead an attack?
"I... Agreed to help her. We would come to London together and I would use the opportunity to destroy as much of CEDIT's genetics research as possible, to rid the world of all of that evil. She also had her own mission..." Au Revoir spoke slowly.
Which was?
"... I do not know. She did not tell me. I do not think she expected me to make it out of this alive," Au Revoir muttered, narrowing her eyes and frowning, as if that was the first time it had occurred to her that her ally had abandoned her. "Now that I think about it... It is possible that she didn't care about the genetics research at all. It is possible she had another goal and that I was just a distraction. She used me..."
You narrowed your eyes and approached slowly, then placed one hand up upon the woman's shoulder. You added: Vaarvel had used her again. Part of the reason that Vaarvel's deception had worked so flawlessly for so long is that Au Revoir really did respect and trust Vaarvel's guidance. Any weirdness or inconsistency in instructions could be explained away by her admiration for her fellow teammate. It was tragic, really: Au Revoir wanted to believe the best in all of her teammates. There was no way she'd have suspected her tormentor was hiding right under her nose.
"She made a mistake... I'll kill her. She is not stronger than me. I'll rip her limb from limb!" Au Revoir snarled, readopting her old blood-lust as her fists clenched at her sides.
At this point, you had to sympathize with her. Au Revoir had been haunted by the old organization, Adder, for so long. To think that one of the people she trusted the most was secretly working for Adder... You felt betrayed, but you knew that the betrayal must be so much stronger for Au Revoir, who'd worked with her since near the beginning of the Goodbye Girls. Still, if Vaarvel had thought this far ahead, you got the sense that she was counting not only Au Revoir, but anyone who came after Au Revoir as expendable. A vague, uneasy feeling told you that even with Au Revoir's might joined with your own deductive skills, it wouldn't be so easy to sniff Vaarvel out and bring her to justice. In fact, if she got the sense that her mission had gone awry, she'd probably just fade into the shadows.
"Madison. She's in hiding as Madison Pettigrew," Au Revoir snarled, as steam rose from the heated gauntlet ends at the tips of her knuckles. "I'll storm her office and then I'll punch her fucking face in! That smug grin of hers will be blasted all over the office!"
