Promises
While eating good food
“Well… At least that won’t be ruined for you.” She says with a sad smile, holding her lower abdomen. “Here you go, little one.” She places a large bowl of stew in front of her, a wooden spoon in it. She then brings over a plate with meat on it and large baked potatoes, still steaming. “Here’s the butter for the taters.” She grins, radiating happiness. “Dig in! For dessert we’ll have some of those tarts you were serving.” She takes a bit of bread and breaks it up into tiny bites, then puts them into her own bowl of stew. “Did you have any friends at the slaver’s? Any connection with someone?”
“I usually spoke with the little blonde girl next to me, she’s very timid and gets scared easily. I really wish Master would’ve bought her and her sister instead of me so she wouldn’t have to be afraid…”, she takes a bite of the bread and a spoonful of stew, “This is delicious!” She grins from ear to ear.
“Thank you, dearie! It’s the best thing a cook can hear.” Margareth takes another bit of her food. “As for the other little girl, I’ll see what I can do. Maybe John can talk to Master Cor.” She pushes the half eaten bowl aside, then pulls a chicken leg off the plate and takes a tiny bite out of it. “If you ever need anything, little one, you’ll find me here. And please don’t be late again.”
“I won’t, Mada- uh… Marge.” she mumbled at the older lady’s admonishing smile. “And thank you… It means a lot knowing that I have someone I can rely on.” Tears pooling in the corners of her emerald eyes.
