Chapter 33
by SimonLF
Does Wendy show up, or does Raymond?
Wendy escorts you to your new desk
"...escort HER to HER new desk..." the words echo in your mind.
You couldn't even start to think the best way to handle this situation. Were you legally bound to work here now? Were you really Ray's assistant? A secretary?
You need to take a moment to think this through, you get up from the chair, uncrossing your legs with that slick nylon rubbing sensation, and make it to the door. You open it just in time to see Wendy arrive in front of you.
"Jane," Wendy smiles, "let's go." You walk with her, not even saying goodbye to Lisa. "Now," she says, "I don't know which is your desk, but your EmployeeID app does, can you open it?" While you are starting to regret opening the phone, you follow her instructions, and soon you have a map and big arrows that guide you as you make it to your desk. Sure enough, it's right outside Raymond Teller's corner office. In fact, you've got a clear view of his desk. Fortunately he doesn't seem to be in.
Your desk (your desk?) is neat, clean in a beech style; a big notepad and pen already resting on it. It's a corner cubicle, so it's bigger and more open than the other cubicles. The dividers are at the awkward level of not high enough to offer much privacy, and not low enough to make conversation between workers easy, but talking with your neighbours is the last thing on your mind. You sit down and mechanically check the drawers, finding various stationary supplies and some documents and leaflets giving information about the company, or office procedure or clients. You also find a small makeup compact at the back corner of a drawer. A leftover from the previous owner? "You can just keep that," Wendy says, and you just drop it into your purse.
You sit on the comfy black wheeled office swivel to face the big curved desk. Was this really your desk now? Your high heeled shoes hitting the carpeted floor as you scoot the chair forward gives you no illusion of what you look like, you look like an attractive secretary sitting down at her desk. This was insane, what were you going to do? You look up at Wendy who's smiling back at you. "You're going to fit in perfectly here, I know it." You breath heavier for a second at that comment.
Then you see a guy approach from the next cubicle, sandy hair, wearing his shirt casually. "Hello, I guess we're neighbours." He holds out his hand. You try to smile and shake it, "I'm Rick, you are?"
"This is Jane, Mr. Teller's new assistant," Wendy introduces you.
"Ah, are you?," you nod as he releases his grip. "Well, in that case, make me a coffee." He turns and he sits back down in his cubicle. You turn to Wendy with a look of confusion. She answers.
"Rick does work under Mr. Teller in his department, and helping Mr. Teller means helping his department.... Look, it's best just to do what's needed."
You blink for a few moments taking it all in, then rise again for your desk. Wendy points towards the kitchen and you nod remembering you saw it on the way there. You hesitantly step towards it. It's the first task of your new job, and you're making coffee.
