Watch

You wait, cautiously watching from a safe distance and from cover. Nothing seems to happen at all, the crowd just stands and stares at the cube transfixed, mesmerised. You look at the cube yourself. It's just a blank white cube. But the more you look at it the more it seems to... move and writhe on the surface. It's then you realise that something is pouring off the side of it, like one of those fancy fountains at shopping malls. You move around the side of the crowd and see that things were actually happening, you just couldn't see it over the sheeple. They are bathing in something, a white liquid of some sort. Milk? Probably not, but something that looks like it. They are naked, letting this fluid wash over them. Some are licking and suckling the cube directly, drinking heartily from the source, while others writhe with their limbs bent weird in the puddles on the ground. They're not showing emotion, but they all look content. Fluid dribbles down their chins. One drinks so much without swallowing that it pools up in their mouth, spilling out. They're gargling but otherwise not reacting to their drowning.

It's too much for you. Your stomach tenses and does backflips. It's like looking at doppelgänger aliens, uncannily like human but off and wrong. You turn to sneak away, but terror stops you in your tracks.

Everyone is watching you. You have no idea how you didn't pick up on it until now. They're staring, blank eyed and drooling. And then they all speak as a single deafening entity,

"Hello insect."
