Wander over to see his mom

I someone had told him, just a few weeks before, that he'd miss the chance to go to school, he would have thought they were crazy. Now, though, he had nothing to do. Almost all of his friends were at school and the rest were working. He could go back to the studio and play with the cameras or something but that didn't have much appeal. He'd be spending enough time there later in the day.

The thought of what he'd be doing later in the day cheered him. Cherry-smash was here. This afternoon he'd find out which girl had won the cherry-smash contest and he'd get to take his first cherry. He couldn't get over the way the girls had as good as lined up for the chance to lose their virginity to him although, when he thought about it, maybe virginity was something like that sweater your grandmother gave you for Christmas... too nice to throw away but not really something you'd want to actually wear.

After wandering around the Peninsula Center for half an hour and not finding anything interesting to do there, he wandered over to his mom's office. Maybe she would have some ideas on entertainment.

Which she did.

"That studio is a wreck," she said. "If we're going to be living there, which apparently we are as I got notice from our landlords at the apartment that we've been kicked out, it needs to be cleaned. Why don't you buy a broom and sweep it out, mop the floors, scrub down the lighting fixtures, that kind of stuff?"

"I was looking for something to make me feel better, not worse."

"There's nothing like work to take your mind away from your problems."

There wasn't anything like smashing your thumb with a hammer to take your mind off of other problems either but that didn't make him want to do it. On the other hand, she had a point. If he wanted to keep the cute girls coming in to stream, he needed to nice up the place and, no matter how helpful the football players had been, they hadn't exactly been neat in tossing down the furniture.

"Okay, I guess that's a worthwhile idea." He turned toward the door.

"Yeah, of course."

"Is that Matt?" Mrs. Phuan hurried out from her office. "I thought I heard your voice."

"Hi, Mrs. Phuan. Thank you for hiring me that lawyer."

"No problem. But why aren't you in school?"

"I got suspended." He explained what Principal Conner had said.

"Do you have that paper she wanted you to sign?"

He handed it over. "Don't go away, Matt. I'll get him on the phone right now."

Twenty minutes later, Mrs. Phuan called him into her office. "Okay, he is going to fix this. It's ridiculous that she's harassing you like that. Unfortunately it'll take a few hours to get anything done so no school for you today. Uh, I know Cindi was looking forward to blowing you between classes today. Would... would you like me to handle that for you?"
