But where to go?
Try the subway
They must be in the subway. It's dark, empty, and creepy as hell; it couldn't attract anyone but the human race's rejects. Well, maybe a few high school goth kids, but whatever. At least it wouldn't be so hot and bright and disgusting down there.
Ditching the obnoxiously scarlet vest and its neat little name tag into the dumpster, I walked straight from the back of the store toward that old busted section of subway. No backward glances, no second thoughts. There was nothing for me here.
After some aimless wandering--it'd been a while since I'd been over there and I couldn't quite remember the way--I managed to find it. Some old strips of caution tape still clung halfheartedly to the poles at the top of the stairs, but the steps were clear. The tiny shred of spirituality and poetry still in me told me there should be something powerful in descending those steps, that I was choosing to abandon my life and create myself anew, but I felt nothing. Just the faintest hints of anxiety and curiosity.
At the bottom of the stairs, the entrance to the tunnel was boarded up. Pretty shitty job, just some planks nailed across. There was enough room at the bottom for me to slip under without too much trouble.
Damn, I forgot it would be so dark inside. I tried to scan the surroundings, but it took a minute for my eyes to adjust to the lack of light. I could hear some faint scurrying. Typhus, fuck yeah!
I finally managed to catch sight of... something, I don't know, but there was definitely something reflecting a tiny bit of light, somewhere down in the tunnel.
Investigate?
