Chapter 4 by hewhoismany hewhoismany

What are you going to do now?

Try an anime

You actually used to watch anime a lot when you were younger, but as you’ve become more serious about your studies, you’ve had to let that passtime fall by the wayside. Still, you have a ton of recommendations built up, and with it as a Task, why not go ahead and enjoy yourself?

Looking through what you’ve missed, you see one that’s some really popular Magical Girl show. You enjoyed reruns of Sailor Moon as a kid, and have liked more than a few shows in that genre, so you decide to go with that one. It’s on a free streaming service, so you bundle up with your laptop in bed and start the first episode.

The series seems to take the whole ‘magical’ part of the genre farther than most, really leaning into witchcraft tropes and the villains even look like the kind of evil witches popular in a lot of pop culture.

The action and animation are both really good, but every time they go into the magic stuff, you find yourself scoffing. Not because it’s all nonsense, like you would have thought just a few hours ago, but because they’re getting all the details wrong. “That’s not a real summoning circle!” you can’t help but shout at the screen. Then, when the villain does some kind of ritual, you find yourself grinding your teeth with annoyance. This is all wrong!

You’ve never cared about this topic before, but for some reason you’re feeling the strong urge to defend it now that you’ve learned more about it for a class. With the first episode done, you don’t feel like you’ll be looking at more episodes, if only because of how it handled the witchcraft. You select on the app that you finished the Task, and watch what it says about the stat changes.

Confidence 1->2

Culture 0->1

Magic 1->2

Humanity 30->28

Intelligence 36->40

Nerdiness 19->20

You barely pay attention to what it says, after all it’s just some stupid app, but you are interested in seeing what Task has been added to your list. Buy witchcraft material...hmm. You’d never have considered something like that before, but now that sounds really fun. Especially after seeing the subject done so poorly in that anime, it would be nice to better acquaint yourself with the genuine witchcraft...for class, of course. Yes. Definitely for class.

Are you going to buy some witch stuff?
