You and the new nurse, Linda McBee, sit on a bench in the changing room in Labor and Delivery, waiting or the showers to free up at the end of the shift. Your scrubs are in the bin and you're sitting atop towels, stripped to your underwear while you chat and wait.

Linda is petite and pale, with her dark hair and eyes making a dramatic contrast to her skin. But her limbs and core show some development. After all, a nurse has to turn patients and move them from bed to gurney. "What departments did you work in when you were here as a trainee?" you ask. "I don't remember you from then."

"Oh, gosh, several," Linda says. "Health education, the outreach bus, you know. Emergency. And Intensive Care."

You smile. "So you liked our hospital, but didn't care for those departments?"

"Oh, no, I applied for Emergency," Linda says. "But Brenda and Ms. Goodchild talked it over with my trainee supervisors and they thought that based on my talents and interests, and how I worked with the other nurses, I'd actually be the best fit for Labor and Delivery."

"Oh? What was your experience like while you were a trainee?" you ask. "Did you like the people you worked with?"

"Oh, yes," Linda says. "I loved it. I could have practically lived here at the hospital. I made some really intense friendships."

"Intense?" you say. "Wait a moment." You look round the dressing room. The showers are quiet now. Two women are closing their lockers and getting ready to go. When you're alone, you ask Linda, "What do you mean, intense friendships?" Was Linda's earlier emphasis on "under Brenda Box" actually a sexual hint?

"Um, well, I really mean I hooked up with people on my shift. Other women, that is. Especially after a late shift or a double shift."

"I think I may see why Brenda recommended you for Labor and Delivery," you say. "But tell me more."

"Oh, all right," Linda says.
