In this world...

Trilobites - The Oldest Living Fossils

In our timeline, Trilobites went extinct about 251 million years ago as a result of The Great Dying. In this timeline they came pretty close - with all but one species going extinct. This single species survived by leaving the water and moving onto land where it quickly diversified.

Today there are around 2,200 species of Trilobite. A far cry from their peak at 20,000 during the Cambrian, but impressive nonetheless. They can be found on every continent except Antartica and prefer dry environments like deserts, prairies and grasslands or wet ones like swamps, jungles, sewers and caves.

When it comes to their relationship with humans, we've been able to domesticate certain species of these little guys to either be pets, food (they're considered a delicacy in certain Asian countries), pest control and - most importantly of all - waste removers as being an animal who's generalist diet mainly consists of filter feeding and scavenging really comes in handy in places like dumps and water treatment plants.
