Chapter 14 by RegressionSchool

What would she find when she stepped inside?

Toddler Paradise

Anna pushed open the door to her dorm room and froze. Her mouth fell open as she took in the space. It was unlike anything she had ever seen, a room that seemed to belong in a dream more than a college dormitory.

The walls were painted a soft pastel pink, adorned with murals of cartoon animals frolicking in a meadow under a cheerful rainbow. A crib—yes, a crib—dominated one corner of the room. It was large, with high, white slatted sides and an arched headboard painted with tiny stars and moons. The bedding inside was inviting, with a quilt covered in a playful pattern of clouds, and a handful of plush toys nestled against the pillow.

Across from the crib was a playpen. It was spacious, with a padded floor covered in a whimsical print of flowers and animals. Inside, a collection of toys was neatly arranged: colorful blocks, stuffed animals, and a small, plastic tea set. A string of fairy lights draped over the playpen’s edge added a soft, magical glow to the room.

In the corner near the window sat a low shelf filled with picture books, art supplies, and more stuffed animals. Next to it was a cozy, oversized armchair with rounded edges, its cushion thick and inviting, as though it was meant for hours of curling up with a book—or perhaps for cuddling a plushie. A small table beside it held a lamp shaped like a smiling sun, its soft light bathing the room in warmth.

The floors were covered with plush carpeting, so soft that Anna's shoes sank into it as she stepped further inside. Every detail seemed carefully crafted to be as soothing and playful as possible.

Anna blinked, trying to process what she was seeing. “This… is my room?” she murmured aloud. She glanced at the crib again, then the playpen, her cheeks flushing. It wasn’t at all what she’d imagined when she thought of her dorm. It was overwhelming and strange—yet oddly comforting.

After a long pause, she sighed and set her bag down on the soft rug beside the crib. “Okay,” she muttered, rubbing her temples. “I guess this is home now.”

Anna unzipped her bag and began unpacking, trying to ignore the surreal surroundings. She carefully folded her clothes and placed them into the wardrobe, which was painted white with heart-shaped handles. She found herself lingering on the details, her fingers brushing over the smooth wood. It was oddly calming, though the whimsy of it all made her blush every time she glanced at the crib or the playpen.

She placed her toiletries on the bunny-shaped side table near the armchair. The cheerful lamp seemed to beam at her as she arranged her belongings, making her laugh softly despite herself. The low shelf caught her eye, its picture books neatly arranged in rows. She slid one of her own novels onto an empty space at the end, where it felt entirely out of place among the brightly colored covers.

Finally, she pulled out her framed photo of her family. She hesitated for a moment, then placed it on the side table beside the lamp, angling it toward the crib. The familiar faces brought a touch of normalcy to the otherwise surreal room.

Once her bag was empty, she sat down in the armchair, sinking into its soft cushion. She glanced at the playpen, the crib, the glowing fairy lights, and the cheerful murals. It was all so much to take in. Part of her wanted to feel indignant—this wasn’t what a dorm was supposed to look like. But another part of her couldn’t deny how soothing it all was. The room felt safe, like stepping into a cocoon of warmth and care.

Her tablet chimed softly from the side table, breaking the silence. She picked it up and glanced at the notification: a reminder that she’d be meeting Ethan, her assigned caretaker, later. Anna stood and grabbed a light jacket from the wardrobe, deciding she needed to clear her head before the meeting. She walked to the door, pausing for a moment to glance back at the crib and the playpen.

With a deep breath, she opened the door and stepped into the hallway. The day was still young, and outside this whimsical room, a whole new world waited for her.
