Chapter 3
by Vain
So, where is Jack going next then...?
To the nearby hospital, in search for answers
The hospital was only a few minutes ride from Michael's office, and Jack didn't want to waste any more time than necessary, but still he stopped for a second to wave goodbye to the snobby receptionist down in the lobby. She certainly had a suspicious look on her face, as he flashed her a quick, winning smile, and he was pretty sure what kind of questions were going through her mind in that moment.
In a way he would even look forwards to see her again, if only to provoke her further, but otherwise didn't feel too much about joining a company like this one. It still didn't suit him well after all, but then again it could hardly get any worse than the last one...
For now he had other matters to take care of however, and before long he was talking to another, somewhat younger receptionist, in the waiting hall of the city's main hospital. She wasn't much more accommodating than the last one, but was at least able to talk to him like a respectable customer, and even tried to book him an appointment with someone else than the man he wanted to see.
"No, look..." He told her for the third time in a row, and felt like he was slowly losing patience, but tried his best to keep his tone as polite as he could. "I'm only here to see Dr. Thomas Kelly, for personal reasons. And no, I can't wait until after work."
The reason he remembered that name wasn't so strange, since his wife had insisted they went to the same doctor for all her deliveries, and apparently this guy was the most professional this hospital had to offer at the time. He also had a fairly distinctive appearance, which made him even easier to find on a board with pictures of all employees, and it seemed like Shirley was right about him, considering he was holding a top position within the clinic.
"Just tell him that Jack Carter is here to see him." Jack added one more time, while looking at the small portrait beside the counter. The man on the picture was of course many years older now, but he still had the same lanky face, with an unruly nest of reddish hair on top of his head, while his glasses had if possible became even thicker over the last eighteen years or so. "Tell him that I want to speak about one of my daughters."
"Well, I'm calling him then." The young woman finally gave in, and picked up the phone, but sent him an annoyed glare through the glass between them. "Just please don't make a scene if he tells me to call the guards, okay?"
"Yeah, fine." He nodded impatiently, then glanced around him again, but kept one eye on the girl behind the glass. The look on her face when she talked to the man in the other end of the line pretty much told him all that he needed to hear, and just a few moments later he was sent on his way towards the building with personal offices on the other side of the hospital area.
His meeting with Dr. Kelly was actually shorter than the time he'd spent talking to the receptionist, but still he was able to get all the answers he needed for now, and he promised the somewhat shaky old man they would talk again in just a few days. Infidelity was not really punishable by law, though counterfeit certainly was, and Jack was slowly starting to see how his wife had managed to bribe or threaten her way through many different acquaintances over the years.
Now there was only one more place he would need to visit, before all offices were closing up for the day, and he was fairly certain he would find the last few answers there...
But where...?

Girls of Jack
One man's world has been turned upside down, but he may find hope in the most unexpected places.
A story which I hope to work on when I have the time for it. For now it's closed for others, but I'll gladly accept ideas and suggestions for how to improve or continue the story! I've now started adding conditions, which is how I planned it from the start. So far it's recommended to read without activating the play function, but please try it out if you want, and let me know if you find something odd about the scoring.
