Chapter 11 by Pandemos Pandemos

More on the Dickme Princesses

Titana

The Princess and the Hoe (2009) tells the story of Titana, a hardworking young woman in 1920s New Orleans who dreams of opening her own brothel. Unlike many earlier Dickme Princesses, Titana’s story begins with ambition, self-reliance, and a clear personal goal rather than desire. Her life takes an unexpected turn when she has sex with a prince transformed into a zombie on a masked ball, Prince Napeen, inadvertently becoming a zombie herself.

The two must navigate the bayous of Louisiana, facing magical hazards, the villainous Dr. Fellacier, who wants to turn the whole city into mindless sex zombies, and their own initial prejudices and impatience. Throughout their journey, Titana demonstrates resilience, cleverness, and leadership, finding creative–usually sexual–solutions to impossible problems. As she and Napeen work together to break the curse, they develop mutual respect, understanding, and ultimately love. In the climax, Tiana’s determination and ingenuity, combined with Napeen’s transformation of character, allow them to defeat Dr. Fellacier. Titana achieves both her personal ambition and her romantic goal, symbolizing a harmonious balance of independence and partnership.

Artistically, the film blends traditional film with modern touches, evoking the jazz age atmosphere of New Orleans. The score, with contributions from Rancy Twoman, infuses the narrative with music that reflects culture, character, and mood. Titana herself broke new ground as Dickme’s first Black princess, representing diversity, perseverance, and entrepreneurial spirit.

Culturally, Titana is celebrated not only for her courage and talent but also for her example of dedication and self-determination. She reframes the Dickme Princess archetype for a contemporary audience, showing that ambition, intelligence, and compassion are as heroic as a killer bod or royal birth. Titana’s story emphasizes that dreams are realized through hard work, courage, and integrity, making her one of the most inspiring figures in the Dickme canon.
