Chapter 16 by Sentinel_011 Sentinel_011

What's next?

Time to get to work.

Ilyanna wastes no time when she woke up. She makes her way back up the tower and right to the First Enchanter's door.

"First Enchanter?" she calls.

"Hm?" the older mage replies, "Ilyanna, what brings you here?"

"Well, I-" she starts. Her voice catches in her throat. Betraying a friend was never easy, even if they were using blood magic.

"Yes, child? What is it?"

Ilyanna clears her throat and begins again, "First Enchanter, I've uncovered something."

"Oh?" Irving asks, giving her a quizzical look.

"I-it's about Jowan," she says, "He's planning to destroy his phylactery and escape the Rite of Tranquility."

Irving sighs.

"I should have expected this," He says, "I thought that that initiate he dallies with would tell him about the Rite if she found out. Though I never would have thought he'd have the gall to break into the Repository."

"Well, respectfully sir, what did you think would happen? Jowan knows that even if he runs away, he can be found so long as his phylactery exists. And he certainly doesn't want to be made Tranquil. Logically it would follow that this is what his plan is."

The older man chuckles.

"You are right my dear, I should have. I expected him to be more impulsive wanting to run away as soon as he became aware. That is, after all, the path of most would-be Apostates," he says.

"Unfortunately for you, Jowan has never been known to be impulsive."

"True, true. Do you know anything else about their plan?"

"I don't. They won't tell me until I promise to help them."

"I see." Irving's face hardens before he continues, "Reporting him to Graegoir will accomplish nothing but what has already been planned. If the Circle would be **** to punish one of its own, I would see the Chantry done the same courtesy. Lily will not walk free while my apprentice suffers."

Ilyanna stiffens. Being his personal apprentice, she had seen this part of her mentor before. The anger he kept just below the surface. If anything, it proved to her exactly how much he cared about his fellow mages and the indignities they suffered.

Even if it scared her.

Ilyanna felt the warmth of a hand on her shoulder. Turning, she could see a phantom image of Michael standing behind her.

"I am here with you. Do not be afraid." said the voice of her companion in her mind. Ilyanna shook her head, refocusing on the task at hand.

"If that is what you want, she'll need to be caught in the act. The Templars won't believe it otherwise," she says, "It means I'll have to help them break into the Repository."

Irving sighs, "I know, child."

"Can I count on your support when all of this comes to a head?"

Irving smiles, his expression softening.

"Of course, child. You know that."

"I know," she says, "I just need to hear you say it."

Ilyanna makes her way out and begins walking back towards where she had left Jowan and Lily.
